Scorpio Motorsport’s David Epton arrives at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit
next weekend, 23rd/24th September, for the penultimate meeting of the
Formula Renault UK season focused on achieving his first ever podium in
the championship.
Originally from Fleet in Hampshire but currently residing in Preston,
Lancashire, David has been tantalisingly close to achieving his maiden
Formula Renault UK podium on several occasions this year and is
confident the upcoming 17th and 18th rounds of the season at Brands
Hatch could bring the success he deserves.
The 25-year-old, who is sponsored by Bombardier Learjet, Universal
Weather & Aviation Inc and Jet Air International Lebanon &
Germany, produced his fourth top six finish of the year at Donington
Park last weekend – the event attracting 90,000 spectators over the
course of two days - and ahead of Brands Hatch he is setting his sights
higher.
“I’m confident we will be strong next weekend and I think we’ll have
the pace to at least put us in the top six”, commented David, “During
the last few race meetings and tests we’ve been getting quicker and
quicker so if we can hook everything up in qualifying I’m confident two
top six results will be there for the taking and, possibly, a podium.”
Theoretically, David will be at something of a disadvantage compared to
his fellow competitors having missed the season-opening race meeting,
which took place at the Kent venue in April, and also an exclusive
two-day pre-season test in March.
However, the Scorpio ace has enjoyed a great deal of success at Brands
Hatch in the past with victories in the Formula Palmer Audi
Championship. During his previous Formula Renault outing at the Indy
Circuit in 2004 meanwhile, he qualified just three and a half 10ths of
a second away from pole position - even though he had brake problems.
“When I raced a Formula Renault at Brands with Motaworld in 2004 it
went quite well”, he added, “We had a brake problem which cost me three
10ths of a second and yet we only missed pole position by three and a
half 10ths. So I’m confident we’ll be able to be among the true
front-runners next weekend.
“I’ve won races at Brands before in Palmer Audi and I’m looking forward
to some good results this time. It’s technically my home track, more so
than Thruxton in many ways, so I’m very much looking forward to a good
weekend.”
Official testing will take place on Friday, 22nd September, with
qualifying scheduled for Saturday, 23rd September. The Round 17 session
is expected to start at 11.20 while Round 18 qualifying is set to begin
at 16.10.
Both races will then follow on Sunday, 24th September with the first
24-lap encounter timetabled for 11.55 and Round 18 scheduled to start
at 15.05. Motors TV will broadcast both races live on channel 413 of
the Sky Digital platform and via channel 545 of the NTL cable service.
