Round two of the Australian Formula Ford Championship makes its way to Western Australia this weekend, with the entire round set to be telecast to a national audience on Network Seven.
1997 Australian Formula Ford champion and current V8 Supercar Toll HSV Team driver Garth Tander is set to step into the commentary box to help call the weekend's opening race, which will be shown live with the V8 Supercar telecast on Saturday 24 March on Network Seven.
A week later on Saturday 31 March, Network Seven will broadcast a half
hour show fully dedicated to showcasing all three races from the action
at Barbagallo Raceway this weekend, giving teams, drivers and
spectators alike a chance to review all three races back to back.
"It's fantastic for everyone involved with the category, from sponsors
to teams and drivers, all the way down to the spectators," said
Category Manager Margaret Hardy.
"Television coverage is something we haven't had for a long time, and
to have a half hour time slot dedicated entirely to Formula Ford has
everyone excited and gives us a great opportunity for expansion in the
future.
"It's also a bonus having a previous Formula Ford Champion in Garth
Tander to help with commentary, you only have to look at what he has
achieved to see how important Formula Ford can be in career
progression," said Hardy.
Each round of the series is set to have at least one race broadcast on
Network Seven, with half hour shows to be telecast a week after the
Barbagallo and Sandown (Melbourne) rounds wrapping up all the action
from those two weekends.
Adelaide played host to the opening round of the championship earlier
this month, and it was clearly evident the field has many competitors
capable of challenging for the 2007 crown with some impressive times
and driving on display.
Tim Blanchard took round honours in Adelaide and has been testing his
new Jaylec Mygale SJ07 between rounds under no illusions of just how
competitive racing will be at Barbagallo this weekend.
"We have done some further testing to try and sort out exactly what
the car does and doesn't like as we only took delivery of the new
chassis a few weeks out from the opening round," explained Blanchard.
"It was a great way to start the year, but the field is very
competitive this year- there are plenty of drivers that will challenge
for the title."
Blanchard takes a nine point lead into Barbagallo, with team mate James
Moffat in second position and CAMS Rising Stars Kristian Lindbom and
Ashley Walsh in third and fourth position respectively.
