The Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team took time out for the sport of karting in the lead up to and during the 2007 FORMULA 1™ ING Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne last weekend.
Courtesy of his outstanding results during 2006, young Gold Coast driver Chris Hays was selected by Vodafone to be its guest during the four days of the prestigious event.
Hays’ results in 2006 included victory in three state championships,
two second places and victory in the prestigious Premier State Cup.
His weekend began by attending a media function with two-time World
Champion Fernando Alonso, his Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team-mate Lewis
Hamilton and TeamVodafone V8 Supercar drivers Craig Lowndes and Jamie
Whincup.
Vodafone announced it is giving Hays the opportunity to receive support
and inspiration from dynamic Formula 1 rookie, Lewis Hamilton as a
mentor for coaching and advice throughout the season.
Lowndes and Whincup will also foster his talent on local tracks with a
series of one-to-one practical training sessions during the year.
The young driver believes these opportunities will take him one step closer to making his mark on the track.
“This is the most exciting thing that has ever happened to me! These
drivers are amazing and it’s my dream that someday I could be as good
as them,” said Hays.
Throughout the weekend Hays visited the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes pit
area and also had the opportunity to meet team owner Ron Dennis.
Hays’ next major event will be the National Sprint Kart Championships
at Sydney’s Eastern Creek International Karting Raceway on April 6-8.
