Pole For Metcalfe During Season Opener At Brands PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 01 April 2007
Jeremy Metcalfe got his 2007 Formula Renault UK Championship campaign off to an outstanding start at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit this afternoon by claiming pole position, the second of his single-seater career, for tomorrow’s opening round of the season.

The Fleet-based AKA Cobra driver, who is relishing the opportunity of mounting a serious and sustained challenge for the Formula Renault UK crown this year, was in superb form for round one qualifying and made sure he heads the front row for the first of Sunday’s races by posting a scintillating lap of 44.348 seconds (97.30mph).

“What a way to start the year”, said the ecstatic 18-year-old at the conclusion of the first qualifying session of the season, “We knew we had a set-up capable of a quick time and after making a small change midway through it gave us the edge so I’m really delighted.

“We went well at Brands Hatch during the first race meeting last year so I hope to do the same again, but go one step further this time and win. I’m confident we have a good race set-up and if I can get away from the line cleanly we stand a great chance.”

Unfortunately for Jeremy, qualifying for round two didn’t go according to plan and the Loughborough University student will start the second of Sunday’s races seventh on the grid, a best time of 44.796 seconds (96.33mph) seeing him miss out on the front row of the grid by just two 10ths of a second.

“Brands Hatch Indy is perhaps the most difficult of the circuits we visit to overtake on so starting seventh is far from ideal”, added the BillChaser-backed ace, “If we can make the most of our pole position in the first race, round two will be about consolidation and taking as many points away from the weekend as we can.”

The opening round of the 2007 Formula Renault UK Championship will take place at 12.10 tomorrow, Sunday, 1st April, with round two scheduled to follow at 17.30. Both races will be shown live by digital satellite and cable subscription broadcaster Setanta Sports 2 – please check listings for further details.
