Formula Vee And Dunlop Abarth Cup Headline Season Opener PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 04 April 2007
Mondello Park kicks off the Irish circuit racing season this weekend with an eleven race programme featuring the second race of the Formula Vee season and the first two rounds of the Dunlop Abarth Cup. The Co. Kildare Motor Club will be in charge for Sunday's busy event which also includes the opening rounds of a number of other Irish championships.

The Formula Vee season got off to a controversial start last weekend at Kirkistown where the championship points were decided by a two lap sprint. Following a red flag the race was run over just two laps with class veteran Ray Moore taking the win from pole sitter Paul Sammin. Sammin was under the Co. Down tracks lap record in qualifying and a similarly hot pace can be expected at Mondello Park this weekend.

The Fiat Abarth's will race twice on Sunday with both races counting for championship points. Gordon Kellett, Nigel Pratt and Simon Quinn head the entry list and with no previous champion currently entered the way is open for a new name to steal a march in the championship chase

Formula Libre will add some extra speed and noise to proceedings as the usual mix of F3000 machinery and assorted other high powered single seaters take to the grid. Dan Daly, Alan Kessie, Dan Rooney and Jonathan Fildes will pilot the F3000 cars with the less powerful but more nimble Formula Ireland and Formula Renault derived cars hot on their heels throughout both races.

A twenty car grid of Stryker Sports cars should prove to be a great spectacle with a number of drivers building new cars for the new season. The resurgent class is now split into two with 1800cc engines for the experienced racers and 1600cc for the novice drivers creating two highly competitive races in one. The Strykers will open their season with the last of the weekends double headers.

Also split into two divisions will be another class that is making a comeback, the Fiat's, who will have just one race. the Punto class has benefited from an influx of ex-Uno drivers over the winter leaving the Uno championship to the less experienced drivers and a healthy dose of new arrivals.

Single races for Historic cars and Closed Wheel Libre round out the eleven races and the programme gets underway with the Vee Qualifying race at Noon.
