This Easter’s WPS 24 Hour endurance race at Bathurst marks the opening round of the 2007 Shannon Australian Production Car Championship. The series has undergone a format upheaval with the traditional sprint and handicap races making way for longer endurance events at some rounds.
The APCC will blood with its longest race at the best circuit in Australia, Bathurst - and over half the entrants have signalled their intention to continue on in the eight round series that encompasses four states.
It was windy and at times cloudy, for the first practice session where
BMW chalked up the first bragging rights by being fastest. The turbo
charged 335 of Gary Holt, Paul Morris and Craig Baird circulated with a
best time of 2 mins 35.6382 seconds and had a half seconds margin over
the Mitsubishi Lancer EVO of Bob Hughes, Rick Bates and Peter Gazzard
while the Subaru Imprezza WRX Sti Type C of Neil Crompton, Grant Denyer
and Chris Alajajian was third fastest ahead of the Pro Duct team EVOs
of Bob Pearson, Anton Mechtler/Bruce Stewart and Mark King/Mark
Braem/Jason Walsh.
The Holt BMW heads up Class A, the Hughes EVO leads Class B while in
Class C it’s the Luke Searle and Peter Kelly BMW 130i that shows the
way and is ninth overall. In Class D it’s the Holden Commodore VY SS of
father/son Brian/Garth Walden and Michael Auld at the top with the
Trevor Keene/Andrew Bretherton/Tim Slade Mini Cooper S leading Class E
as Class F has the BMW 120i of Iain Sherrin/Grant Sherrin/Stuart
Jones/Jim Wallace just ahead. Class G and H have only single entries
with the Kean Brooker/Rocco Rinaldo/David Stone Alfa Romeo 159 and the
Holden Astra Diesel Turbo of Samantha Reid/Christina Orr/Leanne
Tander/Lauren Gray respectively.
