Morris Leads The Pack In WPS 12-Hour Enduro PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 09 April 2007
morris_thThe 2007 WPS Bathurst International Motor Festival moves into overdrive tomorrow as 90 drivers contest eight classes to wrap up a big Easter weekend of motor racing.

Today’s qualifying for the WPS 12-Hour Enduro saw a fired up Paul Morris pilot his team’s BMW 335i to pole position, claiming a quickest time of 2:32.1348 around Bathurst’s 6.21 kilometre Mt Panorama circuit.

That effort allows the Morris/Craig Baird and Garry Holt trio to take confidence into the race for overall honours and also in their respective Penrite Rear Wheel Drive Class.

allteams_med The front row of the start grid will be shared with the leading Sonax All Wheel Drive team of Rick Bates, Bob Hughes and Peter Gazzard, after Bates managed to fire off an impressive 2:32.3169 lap in his Mitsubishi Evo.

In a significant first for the Mt Panorama circuit, WPS Racing V8 Supercar driver Max Wilson ran a Champ Car across the hallowed bitumen of Bathurst’s famous circuit.

Emblazoned in Team Australia colours, the high powered open wheel machine proved a major crowd pleaser on an action packed day of activity.

Event Grand Marshall and inaugural Bathurst endurance race winner Bob Jane was a popular fixture among race fans as he happily signed autographs alongside some of the modern stars of circuit racing.

But there was also a more serious side to proceedings as all support classes wrapped up their involvement in the WPS Bathurst International Motor Festival.

Racing at Mt Panorama brings out the best in drivers and that was definitely the case in the pocket-rocket Aussie Racing Cars as they continued to entertain.

Without doubt the Bathurst stage belonged to Paul Morris as he drove to victory in Race 3 on his way to his first round-victory in the competitive category.

Morris started from the front rwo and tussled race-long with a freight train of opponents including Brad and James Ward, Neil Crompton, Phil Ward, Paul Kemal and Ben McCashney.

A last lap battle saw Morris slip-stream his way to the front down Conrod Straight and he then proceeded to fend off a challenge from Kemal and the Ward brothers at the final turn to claim the win.

In Commodore Cup Marcus Zukanovic maintained consistency to nail down another chequered flag finish before being pipped at the post in the final race by Geoff Emery.

It was all Bryce Washington in Australian GT Championship as he collected the spoils in each of the two races contested, while David Wall and Allan Simonsen were in sync on the podium during the 12-lap features.

Historics wrapped up a superb support program with Darren Pearce dominating. Grant Wilson, Cameron Worner, Jervis Ward and Dennis Wall all collected minor placings across two races.

In a major coup for the WPS 12-Hour Showroom Enduro the official event website, www.bimf.com.au will have live timing throughout tomorrow’s qualifying and racing on Sunday. Updated minute by minute, live timing means fans will also have the opportunity to see the actual race positioning and fastest lap achieved by each entrant.

Every person who buys a ticket to the WPS Bathurst International Motor Festival, will receive complimentary entry to the National Motor Racing Museum over the Festival.
