Kemal Battles At Bathurst To Maintain Championship Lead PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 09 April 2007
kemal-bimf-sidemedTeam VIP Petfoods’ driver Paul Kemal showed great determination at Bathurst’s Mount Panorama circuit to hold his lead in the Aussie Racing Car Championship Series.

During the final two seven-lap feature events, as part of the WPS Bathurst International Motor Festival, Kemal showed typical fighting spirit to be edged just out of the podium equation.

The reigning Aussie Racing Car title holder and current series leader started from the front row in race two alongside pole-sitter and regular V8 Supercar driver Paul Morris.

Despite taking the early lead then jostling for position with Morris and Neil Crompton Kemal struck a little trouble mid-way through the race.

“The car definitely had the pace and was looking good, unfortunately coming down Caltex straight under brakes I got caught up in some dust and ran wide into the sand,” said Kemal.

Kemal settled back into the race to finish ninth and following some minor front spoiler repairs, he lined up for what would become an edge-of-your-seat ride to the finish line in race three.

Starting from the fifth row, the Team VIP Petfoods driver was back to his best as he moved his way through the field for a dogged third place in the final feature.

“I was happy from the second race as it still meant I started in grid five, which was still up there amongst the front runners so I was comfortable,” said Kemal.

“I had a good start, and then for the next few laps a huge pack of 6 or 7 of us were running together, with constant slipstreaming and passing.

“About half way it settled down for a bit and I found myself just behind the leaders.

“On the last lap I had made it to second down Conrod Straight and tried to pull out for the lead over Morris, however James Ward tagged onto his back so he got the extra tow he needed to pull away.

“I crossed the line maybe just half a car length behind second position, and ended up fourth for the round and still in the series lead…so it wasn’t a total loss,” grinned Kemal.

Team VIP Petfoods’ lead driver Craig Baird may have been out of team colours but his WPS 12 hour Showroom Enduro outfit was on the money in Bathurst as Paul Morris collected pole position.

“Obviously the day was successful and we now have the first part of the weekend (qualifying) out of the way which is good,” said Baird.

“Until you qualify you don’t really know where you stand, everyone’s real speed or whether they are sandbagging or not, so it is really nice to be starting on pole.”

Today’s efforts left Kemal fourth overall for the round and retaining his series lead, and will see Baird and his #20 team mates line up on pole for tomorrow’s WPS Bathurst 12 hour Showroom Enduro kicking off at 5.45am.
