Targa Tasmania - Rally Number One For Team VIP Petfoods PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 17 April 2007
Team VIP Petfoods stalwart Tony Quinn will kick off his stable’s intensive 2007 rally program when he climbs behind the wheel of his 2006 Porsche 991 GT3 Cup 997 Turbo next Tuesday for his 8th Targa Tasmania rally.

The five-leg affair – running from the 17th to the 22nd of April - will provide the perfect testing ground for team owner Quinn, who is looking to gain valuable insight into his relatively new car in preparation for the team’s busiest race season to date.

The action-packed Team VIP Petfoods’ racing calendar of 26 events includes no less than eight rally ventures, highlighted by June’s prestigious Nurburgring 24-hour in Germany where the team placed 9th on debut in 2006.

“At last year’s Targa Tasmania we were going well and I thought we could aim for a top 5 finish but a crash on the final day put an end to that,” Quinn said.

“This year I am looking to finish and become better acquainted with the car as the Porsche 997 turbo we’re running is still very much under development.

“To be honest it really takes a few years to get Targa cars running to optimal performance, so this is something which we’ll be constantly working on during this event and over the course of the entire year.

“It is most certainly going to be an interesting campaign and I am looking forward to getting out there again.”

Targa Tasmania is considered one of the toughest races of its kind where vehicles are this year required to cover more than 2000 kilometres, including 450 competition kilometres over 42 stages.

The Team VIP Petfoods’ 2007 rally calendar also includes the Lake Mountain Sprint, Germany’s Nurburgring 24 hour, Queensland’s Suncoast Rally, Western Australia’s Australian Safari, Targa West, Dunlop Targa New Zealand and the Mount Buller Sprint.

Quinn will arrive in Tasmania this weekend to undertake some early reconnaissance work before strapping himself in for the first day of action on Tuesday with regular navigator Keith Wenn.
