International Formula Master (IFM) has received the backing of Formula 1 superstar, Rubens Barrichello, as it was announced the premier feeder series to motorsport’s top flight, GP2, also wants a piece of the IFM action.
The Series’ top prize of a test in GP2, combined with €240,000 of total prize money, will be with Campos Racing. Part of the GP2 Series since 2005, Campos Racing is currently running IFM Development Driver Giorgio Pantano as one of their drivers, alongside Russian Vitaly Petrov. The team is about to start GP2’s 2007 season in Bahrain this weekend and have showed great form in testing so far.
“Having a GP2 test as the top prize for the Series reinforces our goal
to position IFM as a definitive stop for young drivers on their way to
the top,” said IFM Series Director Mauro Sipsz. ”I cannot wait to see
how our stars of the future fare against established GP2 drivers like
Giorgio Pantano, who drives for Campos Racing.”
The brand new single-seater series received further endorsement from
the motorsport hierarchy with Honda F1’s driver, Rubens Barrichello,
giving it his seal of approval.
“We are all aware how hard and costly motorsport can be,” said the
Brazilian who made his Formula 1 debut in 1993. ”I think that the new
International Formula Master Series has an appropriate approach, being
competitive and also cost-effective including guaranteed exposure with
Live TV which helps the drivers provide their sponsors with return on
investment.
“I am asked advice many times to guide young drivers in their careers and IFM will be one of my options.”
International Formula Master will be concluding the Formula S2000
development programme at Vallelunga next week, ahead of the Series’
first team shakedown at Monza on 26/27 April.
The IFM season will start on 20 May at Valencia, Spain. It will then
follow the FIA World Touring Car Championship to all its European
rounds.
