Team VIP Petfoods’ Robbie Bolger has become the first interstater to win a Drift Australia event since 2005, beating South Australia’s Leighton Fine to win round two of the 2007 Toyo Drift Australia Series at Mallala at the weekend.
Overcoming history and a personal “worst round ever” at Barbagello's series opener, Bolger’s win catapults him from 15th to 4th in the series standings and into serious title contention with four rounds remaining.
Winton’s 2005 round was the last time an interstate driver triumphed over local contenders – ironically won by Jeremy Lake aboard Bolger’s own Holden Monaro which yesterday was victorious in the most controversial event finish to date.
“During the first run there was some contact between us, Fine went
straight and I went underneath and then went wide, so we touched a
bit,” said Bolger.
“Obviously these aren’t the circumstances in which you want to win, but
aside from that I can’t complain with how it went here against the
local guys.
“The car was just brilliant, it was the result we needed after
Barbagello – we focused on setting the car up better and everything
went well.
“Hopefully this is our starting point for a championship challenge, we
just need to put our heads down and keep getting these kinds of
results.”
Bolger will now head to Eastern Creek for round three in July, however
if all goes to plan it won’t be behind the wheel of his beloved Monaro
– instead Bolger hopes to debut his latest project for the Australian
drifting scene – a VE Commodore.
“We are planning on having the VE ready for Eastern Creek’s round three,” said Bolger.
“I am planning on driving it, however we will have some tests
beforehand and if it is not ready we will wait – I do not want anything
to jeopardise my chance at the championship.”
