Targa Tasmania Prologue Top Ten For Team VIP Petfoods PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 19 April 2007
Team VIP Petfoods chief Tony Quinn and co-driver Keith Wenn have taken eighth position in their #996 2006 Porsche 991 GT3 Cup (Type 997) Car during today’s George Town Targa Tasmania Prologue.

The short stage of 4.81km, which simply sets the starting positions for tomorrow’s first leg of the event, enabled Quinn and Wenn to stretch the legs of their car ahead of a grueling five days and over 2000 kilometres to come.

Earlier this week, Quinn met up with fellow Queenslander Ray Vandersee, creator of the Skelta G-Force sports car.

Both drivers only just failed to finish their 2006 Targa Tasmania campaigns and the outcomes had little to do with the ability or resilience of man or machinery.

Fast forward 12 months and the demons of 2006, where each driver’s charge was mercilessly cut short on the final day, have served as a motivating force.

“Last year we were aiming for a top five finish but unfortunately a crash on the final day put an end to that,” said Quinn.

“In light of 2006 this year we are aiming to finish and gain valuable car knowledge as the Porsche 991 GT3 Cup (Type 997) Car we are running is still fairly new.

“Today was pretty good, we had some issues with the car’s computer and also a tyre leaking, but we now have that sorted out.

“Being eighth on the road tomorrow is a good start, but there is a long way to go yet so we will be focused on staying on the black stuff and giving it everything we’ve got.”

Targa Tasmania is considered one of the toughest races of its kind where vehicles are this year required to cover more than 2000 kilometres, including 450 competition kilometres over 42 stages.

This years’ Targa Tasmania will be Quinn’s eighth and the first in a long line of rally ventures to come for his team this year, with up to eight rally ventures on the cards including June’s prestigious Nurburgring 24-hour where the team placed 9th on debut in 2006.
