This weekends championship car race meeting at Mondello Park has something for everyone with the best of Saloon, Single Seater and Sportscar action. The event which will be run jointly by the Leinster Motor Club and The Motor Enthusiasts Club features the first 2007 Mondello Park visits by the Dunlop Supercars, Formula Ford, Porsches, Formula Sheane and Global Lights.
For Saloon racing fans the always spectacular Dunlop Supercars will line up for two races with their biggest grid for a couple of years. Fifteen cars have been entered bringing the class back to the numbers seen its heyday a couple of years ago and making it the undisputed premier Irish saloon series.
Formula Ford has always been the favourite of single seater fans and
the class benefits from a host of newcomers this season as the number
of young drivers using the class to start their motor racing careers
continues to grow. This class was traditionally the place to look for
emerging new talent and with some of the old hands missing from this
weekends entry the way is open for some new stars to emerge. Familiar
Formula Ford names from the past such as O'Hara, McKenna and Barrable
continue to appear on the entry lists only now its the younger family
members aiming to follow in the footsteps of their fathers and
brothers. Two races for Formula Ford are scheduled.
Formula Libre continues to grow its numbers with more cars becoming
available all the time. The grid will as usual contain a number of
F3000 derived machines with John Naylor the latest to join the ranks
with his Lola Chevrolet. The Libre championship is now split into up to
2000cc and over 2000cc divisions and the new smaller class is very
strong with Formula Ireland, Formula Renault and Formula 3 machines
making the running. The Leastone Formula 5 class also joins the grid
for both races this weekend for its first 2007 appearance.
Rounding out the single seater classes will be a single race for
Formula Sheane. The Irish built Rover powered cars always provide very
close racing and this season should be no exception with all of the top
drivers from the past two season returning to battle for the '07 title.
Sportscar followers will be entertained by two races each for the
Porsche Open championship and Global Lights. The Porsche class this
year sees an influx of very modern machines with a number of ex Porsche
Carrera Cup cars joining the Irish championship. Global Lights
continues to grow in stature also with the biggest ever entry for an
Irish only championship race. Previously the class relied on visiting
UK cars to boost its numbers but it is now healthy enough to attract
sixteen cars without any visitors.
