Loughborough University student Jeremy Metcalfe is aiming to add more podiums, and hopefully race victories, to his season’s tally during the third and fourth rounds of the Formula Renault UK Championship at Rockingham on Sunday following on from a promising test outing at the Northamptonshire venue earlier today.
The AKA Cobra star, who originally hails from Fleet in Hampshire, produced a steady performance during the first of today’s two 45-minute runs on the 1.95-mile International Super Sportscar Circuit, ending the session in the top 10 with a best lap of 1m 16.895 seconds (91.23mph).
Session two saw Jeremy right back at the sharp end, a best lap of 1m
16.512 seconds (91.69mph) taking him to the top of the timesheets, and
although he eventually slipped to sixth fastest he did end the
afternoon outing just 0.098 seconds shy of the top spot in what proved
to be one of the most competitive tests in the recent history of the
series.
Classified eighth overall on combined times courtesy of his best time
from session two, Jeremy is confident the AKA Cobra team has a good
race set-up for rounds three and four and will be aiming to add to the
victory he achieved during the first race of the year at Brands Hatch
Indy Circuit three weeks ago.
“Rockingham is a great circuit to drive and I’m really looking forward
to the races”, said the BillChaser-backed ace, “We did a lot of
important work today and I’m confident we stand a good chance of being
on the podium and, hopefully, fighting for more wins.
“Eighth fastest overall for the day isn’t really a true indicator of
where we are in relation to the others and I’m confident we can
challenge for the first two rows on the grid in qualifying tomorrow.
We’ve got a good car and if we can end the weekend with a couple of
podiums I’ll be happy.”
Currently third overall in the 2007 Formula Renault UK Championship
standings, Jeremy is just 12 points shy of the top of the table ahead
of this weekend’s races – both of which will be broadcast live on
digital satellite and cable subscription channel Setanta Sports 2.
Qualifying for round three will take place at 09.00 tomorrow, Saturday,
21st April, with the round four session scheduled to get underway at
14.15. Both races are timetabled for Sunday, 22nd April, with round
three starting at 10.35 and round four beginning at 14.50.
