Four times and reigning Supaloc Australian Saloon Car Champion Bruce Heinrich has started off the new 2007 season in perfect style by putting his new Ford Falcon AU on pole for the first of three races constituting the opening round of this year’s championship.

The South Australian recorded a time of one minute 19.7866 seconds in the first of two qualifying sessions at Oran Park today (April 21) to be the fastest of the 21 car entry in the first of this eight round series.

Second fastest was Queenslander Kris Walton also in a newly constructed Falcon. His time was recorded in the morning session and he was unable to better his 1m20.1026 due to a broken exhaust that kept him out of session two. Walton had been the fastest throughout yesterday’s practice sessions.

The fastest man in the second qualifying session was 2004 Champion Clint Harvey in yet another AU Ford. The West Australian was fractionally faster than Heinrich and fellow Ford runner Scott Nicolas from Queensland.

Best of the Holden runners in both outings was Jake Camilleri in his VT and while this make’s numbers are down this weekend compared to the ‘Blue Oval’, most are in or near the top ten as Shawn Jamieson, John Goodacre and Tim Rouse put in strong qualifying two performances.

Shane Smollen made contact with a wall in the first session, realigning the right side of his Ford yet able to continue later while the second session was abbreviated by around two minutes when Rouse bunkered his Holden. Brad Piggott was another into one of the gravel traps but manage to extricate himself, albeit with clutch and gearbox dramas as a result of gravel intake into his Falcon.
