Reigning British Super ICA kart Champion Ollie Millroy bounced back from a disappointing qualifying to take two strong top ten finishes in the second round of the Italian Open Masters at Ugento yesterday. The youngster who celebrated his 17th birthday on Saturday and the works Zanardi team struggled to find the pace on Friday and Saturday and qualified 24th for the first of two heats in which he lined up 16th.
After starting the weekend over 1.5 seconds adrift of the front
runners, Ollie headed into the two finals in fighting mood, determined
to pull back the deficit, which he did as he notched up a tenth and
16th place finish in the two heats earning him a 17th place start for
the first final on Sunday morning.
A storming drive from the Claygate teenager saw him take a superb sixth
place, scoring valuable championship points and setting him up well for
a possible victory in the second final. Starting sixth, the youngster
struggled slightly being one of the few drivers running without the
benefit of four fresh tyres, although he drove a steady race to take
eighth place and more championship points.
The Surrey star declared himself happy with the results, however, the
gap to the more experienced opposition reduced down to just two tenths
of a second at the end of the weekend as he continues his learning
curve in the ultra-competitive KF1 (Formula A) category.
“It was a weird weekend, to be honest,” said Ollie. “At the start we
were around 1.5 seconds off the pace, we just really struggled but by
the end we were down to just two tenths. Everything came together at
the end, but we’d been suffering early on.”
“This weekend was the first real opportunity to run on a super grippy
track and we learnt a lot. Hopefully we can carry that through into
the Europeans.”
Ollie will stay at the Southern Italian track for a day’s testing today
in preparation for the opening round of the European Championship which
kicks off at Ugento in two weeks time.
