Irishman Jonathan Fildes will be gunning for nothing less than race victory at Thruxton next weekend, 5th/6th May, when the third round of the 2007 ELF Renault Clio Cup takes place at the ultra-fast Hampshire venue.
With the opening two race meetings of the season having been nothing short of a disaster for the Total Control Racing ace after being eliminated from both encounters through no fault of his own, Jonathan is hoping to begin scoring points at Thruxton and turn around a campaign which should rightfully see him in the thick of the title battle.
During the Co. Meath driver’s championship winning ELF Renault Clio Cup
season in 2003, he climbed onto the Thruxton podium during the fifth
round of the year and is confident he can replicate the same level of
performance next weekend.
“We’ve got to go out, drive our own race and hope we have better
fortune than during the first two rounds”, said the Applied Signs &
Display, Asgard Taverns, Atari Expo and Barry Evans Plastics-backed
star, “The Thruxton test a couple of weeks ago was grand so we know
we’ll be quick.
“But as we already know from the first two events at Brands Hatch and
Rockingham, you can prepare as well as you like but it can count for
nothing if you get caught-up in other people’s problems during the
qualification races.”
With 32 points available for a race win in the Sunday encounter at each
event, and with an additional two points up for grabs for setting the
fastest race lap, Jonathan is aiming for a maximum score at Thruxton to
kick-start his championship campaign.
“It’s very frustrating and annoying for both me and the team because we
know we should be arriving at Thruxton next weekend in a strong
position in the championship”, added the 31-year-old, “We have to
remain positive though. I’m going out there to win, that’s the sole aim
and I know TCR will give me the car capable of doing that.”
Round three of the 2007 ELF Renault Clio Cup, which will be broadcast
live on cable and digital satellite channel Setanta Sports 2, is
scheduled to take place at 14.25 on Sunday, 6th May. Jonathan’s Group A
qualifying session is timetabled to begin at 13.30 on Saturday, 5th
May, with the Group A qualification heat expected to start at 17.40.
