Team Australia driver Marcos Ambrose has made a strong start to proceedings for this weekend’s Aaron’s 312 at the Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama today. Ambrose was fifth fastest and top rookie in opening practice and backed up that fine effort with 17th fastest in final practice, just one spot behind the fastest rookie of that session and Ambrose’s Raybestos Rookie of the Year rival, Juan Pablo Montoya. The Australian showed strong form in the Aussie Vineyards-backed #59 Kingsford Charcoal Ford Fusion and was pleased with the day’s progress as he worked on all-important set-up for the race, which will be Ambrose’s second superspeedway start in the NASCAR Busch Series. Mike Wallace was fastest in opening practice at the 2.66-mile Talladega Superspeedway today and Mike Bliss the quickest driver in final practice. Marcos Ambrose – Aussie Vineyards-backed #59 Kingsford Charcoal Ford Fusion “We had a productive day today and we were happy with the speed of the Kingsford car,” said Ambrose. “It’s really important to have a car that works well in the draft around Talladega and that’s what we’ve been working on. “It’s going to be a tough race and we are going to play on the conservative side of things in the first half of the race. You’ve got twenty Nextel Cup drivers racing in Busch this weekend so you would expect a lot of those guys to be at the front as they have a lot of superspeedway experience. “The idea is going to be to have a car that works well in the draft, make sure you are still on the lead lap with a straight race car when the last pit stop comes around, then see where you are and try to move forwards from there.” RESULTS: Practice 1 1. #7 Mike Wallace 48.525 2. #33 Tony Stewart 48.561 3. #1 JJ Yeley 48.749 4. #47 Jon Wood 48.906 5. #59 Marcos Ambrose 49.025 6. #10 Dave Blaney 49.106 7. #9 Kasey Kahne 49.216 8. #6 David Ragan 49.221 9. #41 Reed Sorenson 49.241 10. #38 Jason Leffler 49.321 RESULTS: Final Practice 1. #22 Mike Bliss 49.575 2. #27 Ward Burton 49.698 3. #36 Brent Sherman 49.796 4. #11 Martin Truex Jr 49.856 5. #16 Greg Biffle 49.947 6. #9 Kasey Kahne 49.976 7. #66 Steve Wallace 49.998 8. #29 Scott Wimmer 50.013 9. #49 Jon Wood 50.098 10. #99 David Reutimann 50.144 17. #59 Marcos Ambrose 50.293 2007 NASCAR Busch Series Points Standings – After Race 9 1.
