Wreck Robs Ambrose Of Top Finish At Talladega PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 30 April 2007
Team Australia star Marcos Ambrose has driven an outstanding race only to lose any chance of a top 10 finish in a multi-car accident in the final laps of the Aaron’s 312 at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama today.

Ambrose was running inside the top ten and in the leading group of cars in the Aussie Vineyards-backed #59 Kingsford Charcoal Ford Fusion when on lap 109 he was spun around in front of the pack in an accident triggered by contact between Reed Sorenson and Steve Wallace.

The accident ended the races of Ambrose, Sorenson and Wallace as well as David Reutimann, Kasey Kahne and Stephen Leicht. Ambrose was classified 25th after the accident.

Ambrose was on track for potentially his highest NASCAR Busch Series finish when the accident put an end to the Australian’s race. The 30-year-old drops one place to ninth in the NASCAR Busch Series standings after today’s tenth race of the season.

Ambrose began to move forward early in the race but was hit from behind as he slowed for an accident ahead on lap 10. The contact spun Ambrose but he was able to avoid further damage as he spun to the infield and after pitting for repairs to the rear of his car he was able to continue.

The Australian then set about climbing through the field and looked to have timed his run to perfection when he sat 12th as the caution flag flew with 12 laps to go.

At the restart Ambrose moved into the top ten, staying on the low line after earlier making a charge on the outside line only to fall back in line on the lower path.

Sitting in a top ten position Ambrose was poised to make a run that could potentially have bettered his previous best Busch Series finish of eighth in Mexico City until contact between other drivers triggered the seven-car incident that removed much of the leading pack on the back straight of the 2.66-mile superspeedway.

Bobby Labonte won today’s Aaron’s 312 at Talladega Superspeedway in front of an estimated crowd of 75,000 people ahead of his team-mate Tony Stewart, with Casey Mears finishing third.

Ambrose will have his first race at Richmond International Speedway next weekend for the 11th race of the NASCAR Busch Series on May 4.

“We have got a bad result from a very good day,” said Ambrose.

“We were right up there in the second half of the race today. I had the car right in there in the lead pack where it can be quite daunting but the car was good and I had the confidence to get up there and mix it with the big boys.

“I was trying my best out there and I learned a lot. I felt like I ran well at the front and was aggressive. We were about sixth in the line on the bottom when we got hit. It was coming to us but it just wasn’t our day.

“I’ve been turned around twice in a race a Talladega and I’m still fit and healthy and I didn’t roll over, so that’s something. I was running on the low line and something just happened above us and I was sideswiped. It spun us into the fence in front of the whole field in the middle of the back straight. I saw cars going everywhere destroying themselves.

“Today could have been very good for us but it wasn’t to be. I’m happy to be running here in NASCAR and doing well for Kingsford Charcoal and all of our sponsors.

“I was having a great time out there today and was loving every minute of it. We were running well but just got spun. Cars were going absolutely everywhere. You’ve got to enjoy the highs and the lows I guess.”
