Bacheta extends FPA lead with Round 5 win PDF Print E-mail

Luciano takes second win of season at Brands Hatch

Luciano Bacheta extended his lead in the 2007 Visma Formula Palmer Audi Championship to 18 points after taking his second win of the season in Round 5 at Brands Hatch.

Starting second, the 17-year-old got the jump on Jolyon Palmer at the start, but was kept honest all the way as he took the victory by just over two seconds. Behind Bacheta, Palmer took the first podium finish of his single-seater career with second, coming out on top of a breathtaking battle with Tim Bridgman after battling past at Pilgrim's Drop on the penultimate lap. Bridgman held third to complete a hat-trick of podium finishes for the weekend, just ahead of a fast-closing Stefan Wilson.

"That was undoubtedly the toughest race of my career," said Bacheta after his victory. "As much as I tried I couldn't pull away from Jolyon and I just couldn't afford to make a single mistake!"

Palmer, meanwhile, was happy to conclude a strong weekend with a display of defensive driving that belied his experience. "It was very hard," said the 16-year-old. "Tim is a very fast driver and keeping him behind was a tough task. He got through but I'm really happy to have got back past him, and it really sums up what an awesome weekend it's been!"

Third-placed Bridgman was happy to have notched up another podium to keep his title charge on track: "I tried to get Jolyon, although I was wary of Stefan closing in late on," he said. "I didn't want to make a move early on as I thought Jolyon would stay with Bacheta, but another podium is a good result and it's been a decent weekend for me."

Behind Wilson, Jack Clarke took fifth after coming out best in a titanic five-car scrap, which lasted the entire race and involved position changes on almost every lap. Giacomo Petrobelli, Richard Kent and Tom Bradshaw followed him home, while Jason Moore missed out on another potential top-six finish after crashing at Westfield under pressure from Richard Kent.

Ninth place went to Chris Bell, who maintained his record of top-10 finishes in every race this season, with Chris Chubb taking 10th after passing Richard Plant into Paddock Hill Bend.
