The Balfe Motorsport team heads out to the opening round of the Radical World Cup at the Spanish circuit of Valencia next weekend, for its first European event of the 2007 racing season.
The Newark Glass Group backed team has high hopes of being in the running for silverware over the course of the meeting, after a shakedown race weekend at Snetterton showed that they have the pace to run at the front with the Radical SR8 racecar.
However, drivers Shaun Balfe and Nigel Taylor are under no illusions that the competition will be fierce, with two 100-minute races taking place over the two days, as well as some of the World Cup grid being teams and drivers they have never raced against before.
“There are certainly plenty of unknowns for us as we head to Valencia,”
said Shaun Balfe. “But we’re all looking forward to it. We know that we
have a little bit more work to do to get the car exactly where we want
it but that was what entering the race weekend at Snetterton was for
and we can go to Spain knowing that we can certainly be in with a
chance of a good result,” he added.
The motorcycle Grand Prix venue of Valencia is one that Balfe and
team-mate Taylor have raced on before, when they won the Spanish GT
championship back in 2004. A return to the twisty and challenging track
is a welcome one to Balfe, as it means that he won’t have to learn the
circuit and can get straight into setting the car up as soon as they
hit the tarmac.
“Last time we raced at Valencia we took second place,” said Shaun. “It
is a great circuit and it would be nice to go back and pick up where we
left off in 2004, with a visit to the podium. We’ve got more
information about how the car works in racing conditions after this
weekend and we’re well prepared for the first round,” he added.
The team will have a busy schedule over the Bank Holiday weekend, with
an hour long test on Friday, before qualifying and the first
100-minute, two driver, race takes place on Saturday afternoon. The
second race will take place on Sunday morning.
