Holden drivers and fans are hoping for a Commodore comeback at round two of the 2007 Supaloc Australian Saloon Car Championship at Phillip Island this weekend. The fast flowing nature of the south Victorian island circuit should suit the Holdens after they were beaten by the Ford Falcons at Oran Park last month. Fords filled the top three podium positions there with 2004 Champion Clint Harvey, from West Australia, narrowly winning over South Australian and reigning champ Bruce Heinrich and Queenslander Kris Walton.
Early practice here today (May 4) has John Goodacre (SA) in a Holden as the provisional fastest with another two sessions today before tomorrow’s qualifying periods. Walton, Heinrich and Scott Nicolas were the next best in their Fords ahead of the West Australian Kerry Wade in a Holden. Wade is having his first outing in the series after a successful season in the V8 Ute series, and has been almost unbeatable locally in the West in Saloon Cars.
Sixth fastest was Harvey ahead of the Holdens of South Australia’s
Shawn Jamieson and Victorian Tim Rouse whose weekend at round one,
culminated early after a first race, last lap crash. New South Wales’
Peter Dane lacked speed at his home track but was ninth first up today,
his Ford ahead of the Queenslander Jake Camilleri in another Holden.
So after one session the second round of the 2007 Supaloc is delicately
poised for a best ever match up between Holden and Ford with their
respective VT and AU models with five of each in the top ten.
was a hard fought one, alive to the last round where South Australian
Bruce Heinrich took his fourth title. Throughout the year he had some
of the most amazing ontrack battles with Queenslander Kris Walton and
it is all set to happen again in 2007 - starting with round one at Oran
Park this weekend.
2006 was also the first year that the new generation Holden Commodore
VT and Ford Falcon AU Saloon Cars were eligible to compete. Only a
handful of new models were ready for round one, but as the season
rolled on, competitors were readily making the switch from their
Commodore VN’s and Falcon EA’s.
Another feature of that innovative season was television, with edited
highlights of every round on the Speedweek and Inside Speed programs
and also aired in Europe, Asia and New Zealand. State level racing
known as the TASCCO Challenge and invitation events which included late
additions to two V8 Supercar meetings were other highlights.
The Australian Saloon Car Company (TASCCO) is a foundation member of
the CAMS National Racing Championship, one of the five core categories
(Production Cars, F3, Saloon Cars, Commodore Cup and GT/Porsche) in
partnership with CAMS that now make up the Shannons Nationals.
The popular six cylinder Holden Commodore verse Ford Falcon category is
supported by Supaloc Steel Building Systems, Pedders Suspension, Kumho
Tyres, Xtreme Clutch, EMS Fuel Injection, Cebco Brakes and CSA Alloy
Wheels.
