Following on from the opening round at Bathurst, the Shannons Australian Production Car Championship reverts to its traditional format at Phillip Island this weekend for round two.

Instead of one 12 Hour endurance event such as at Mt Panorama on Easter Sunday, here it is one scratch sprint race and two class structured handicap races. Also novel for the category and the series is that the field is dominated by BMWs where as last year it was Ford.

Heading the line up is the 12 Hour winning BMW 335i Turbo driven by Garry Holt and ably backed up by the fourth place sister car of Barry Morcon. They are in the new SP (Super Production) along with the David Mertens Holden HSV while James Parrish’s RX7 is an SP Trophy entrant.

Class A which was the outright contending class of 2006 contains several cars with winning chances including the BMW 130i’s of Luke Searle, Peter Kelly and Adam Graham while Steve Briffa and Garth Walden will relish the speed of the island circuit.

Chris Delfsma’s Falcon XR8 is the lone Ford in the field while the potentially potent Mazda 3 MPS can factor if it can get over its traction problems.

Olympic skating champion world champion Steven Bradbury was initially in the entry list in another 130i but the four time Olympian crashed the BMW in private testing at Queensland Raceway earlier in the week.

In Class B it’s the Mini Cooper S of Trevor Keene against the Trophy car of motoring magazine Motor’s editor Tim Robson in an older BMW 323i.

Later today the cars will be qualifying for race one, a six lap scratch race that counts to class points only. Then there will be two handicap races over 10 laps which count to both outright and class standings.
