Bathurst 12 Hour winner Garry Holt has put his enduro winning BMW 335i Turbo on pole for the opening scratch race of the second round of the Shannons Australian Production Car Championship at Phillip Island raceway today. At the Shannons Nationals meeting, Holt lapped in 1 minute 51.5012 seconds, knocking Luke Searle’s BMW 130i off the premier position midway through the twenty minute session.
Right at the end, the early pacesetter was bumped off the front row by local Leigh Mertens in his very recently put together HSV GTS Holden which still ran some of its original SSZ components as time didn’t allow for the complete transition.
Searle will share the second row for the initial race with Holt’s team mate Barry Morcom while Adam Graham did enough near the end to push Garth Waldon’s Commodore SSZ to the outside of the third row. Next was the similar machine of Steve Briffa who will have Searle’s team mate Peter Kelly alongside for the first of three races.
Ninth was the lone Ford in the field, that being Hazelbrook’s Chris Delfsma in a Falcon XR8 which just managed to eclipse Tim Robson in the aging BMW 323i. The Thrifty Mazda 3 MPS will start out of position eleven with the Class SP Trophy Mazda RX7 of James Parish alongside and the Class B Mini Cooper S of Trevor Keene just behind.
Following the late Saturday afternoon six lap scratch race, there will be two eight lap, class handicap tomorrow Sunday, at Phillip Island’s round the Shannons Nationals that also embraces the F3 Gold Star, Saloon Car, Commodore Cup, Superkarts and Formula Vee.
