Sandown to host big weekend of non-stop action PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 07 May 2007
mortf_mgv8On May 12-13 Sandown International Raceway will host Round 1 of the 2007 Victorian State Circuit Racing Championships presented by Wurth Australia, where 260 competitors have entered for the 34 Race program.

Ten different categories will fight for class honours and there is something to suit most motorsport fans.  Categories range from big horsepower Sports Sedans and exotic Sports Cars through to the Muscle cars of Bathurst in Historic Touring Cars, Improved Production Cars, HQ Holdens and the next young stars in the Formula Ford open wheelers.

Saturday features Qualifying in the morning and racing from 1pm and Sunday kicks off at 9:30am for a full day of on track action, and free pit entry to everyone. Admittance for spectators is $15.00 on Saturday and $20.00 Sunday, including entry to the Grandstand.

The category list includes:

Sports Sedans
Sports Cars
Historic Touring Cars
Formula Ford
Improved Production
HQ Holden’s
Porsche 944 Challenge
MG Racing
Saloon Cars
Formula Vee

In Sports Sedan’s reigning Champion Dean Camm (Honda Prelude / Chev) will have some stiff opposition in National competitor Mark Nelson (Saab 9-3 / Chev). No doubt the class field will turn it on with entries from Rod Smith (ex-Seton EL Falcon), Bob Gill (ex-Seton AU Falcon) and returning champions Geoff Munday (Chev Camaro / Chev) and Michael Robinson (2005 Monaro / Chev) will be a force to reckon with.  For the nostalgic fan Michael West will run his (Cullen and Jones) Group C Commodore and Graham Sutcliffe will field his ex-Brock Volvo super tourer.

The Sports Car line up is as equally good if not better, Australian GT Championship contenders leading the charge with Matthew Turnbull (Porsche GT3) and Ted Huglin (Ferrari 360 GT).  The local Sports Car contingent will be lead by Mort Fitzgerald (MG B V8), Tom Hutchinson (Triumph TR8), Murray Carter (Chevrolet Corvette C5) and Ross Nicol (Ford GT40 Replica).  Brent Rose (Porsche Turbo) will step into his big brothers shoes for the weekend while Kane sits on the sidelines.  The always entertaining ‘Gorgeous’ George Vidovic (Python Cobra SR/302) returns and it will be amazing to see the bright orange Cobra hunt down the Porsches.

The Historic Touring Cars will entertain even the youngest of fans with Tony Hubbard (Chevrolet Camaro 350) being hunted down by four Ford Mustangs (including Trevor Talbot’s new ‘Stang) and a sole Falcon GT.  Holden Fans shouldn’t worry with the almighty Torana XU1 joined by Kingswood’s and Monaro’s, Mopar fans will have plenty to cheer for with two Chargers up front.  Throw in the Mini’s, Cortina’s, Escort’s and a Mazda RX2 and what a field.

Presentations for 1st to 3rd in classes will be held on Sunday after each race
