Fildes To Make Supercar Return PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 05 September 2006
Reigning Dunlop Supercars Champion Jonathan Fildes will make a guest return to the popular Irish series at Mondello Park this weekend, 9th/10th September, as part of the prestigious ‘Leinster Trophy’ race meeting.

The 31-year-old, who is backed by Asgard Taverns, Applied Signs & Display, Atari Expo and AM Speedsport, competes, of course, in the Blaupunkt SEAT Cupra Championship this year and is currently fifth in the driver standings after taking his fourth podium of the season at Knockhill in Scotland on Sunday.

With a three-week break until the next two rounds of the SEAT season though, the chance to compete on home soil at Mondello Park this weekend is just too good to miss for Jonathan and he’s looking forward to making a victorious return to the championship he won in terrific style in 2005.

“The Leinster Trophy meeting is the biggest motorsport event in Ireland so it’s an honour to be racing at Mondello this weekend”, commented the Co.Meath sensation, “I’m confident we’ll be able to challenge for victory in the Supercars, it’ll be a very enjoyable event and I’m looking forward to racing on home soil again.”

Jonathan’s racing career has seen many highs, none greater than winning the British Touring Car Championship-supporting Renault Clio Cup title in 2003 during his maiden year of competition outside his native Ireland.

From there, a season in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB followed, where Jonathan ended the season fourth overall in the driver standings, and in 2005 he opted to remain in Ireland to contest the Dunlop Supercars series.

Upon his arrival in the UK in 2003, Jonathan brought with him an impressive string of title successes having won back-to-back Dunlop RT2000 Championships in 2001 and 2002. He also became Stryker Sports Car Champion in 1999, with nine wins from 10 starts, and went on that year to be awarded the Dunlop Sexton Trophy as Motorsport Ireland’s ‘Driver of the Year’.
