Massive Top Fuel Bill At Castrol Edge Winternationals PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 15 May 2007
preaddobson-angus_medThe June 8-10 Castrol EDGE Winternationals at Queensland’s Willowbank Raceway is a realistic chance of hosting a full field of at least eight Top Fuel dragsters during the biggest drag racing event in the southern hemisphere.

Such news is music to the ears of Willowbank officials as they count down to the season ending Queen’s birthday weekend extravaganza.

There’s no question regarding the availability of qualified drivers to match the assortment of 8000 horsepower machines that are ready to race at the biggest drag racing show outside North America.

“Talk around the Group One pits has been that all active Top Fuel teams throughout Australia are keen to be represented at the Castrol EDGE Winternationals and that’s been further supported by the recent licensing of drivers,” said Willowbank Raceway General Manager Steve Bettes.

“Western Australia’s Martin Stamatis has now completed licensing with the two car, Jim Read Racing enterprise and competed admirably in his first hit-out in Sydney just over a week ago.

“Then of course we have Mark Mariani who is also rumoured to be completing the licensing process in the hope of a start in Redcliffe Dyno and Performance Top Fuel on June 8-10.

“Mark is the son of Australian drag racing legend Mario who was a strong performer in the company of guys like Jim Read and Santo Rapisarda during the formative years of Australian Top Fuel drag racing.

“Both guys have a strong pedigree in the sport and know exactly what the Winternationals is all about so they’ll be ready to fire for the occasion next month.

“Queenslanders will have plenty to cheer about in Top Fuel with Ipswich’s own Steve Read coming off back-to-back finals appearances which included a winner’s gold Christmas tree in Sydney.

“Of course the Roy Smith, Mick Atholwood combination out of Brisbane will also be in attendance and looking to recapture a slice of Winternationals glory.”

Early indicators suggest that speed and elapsed time records are also liable to be reset during the Castrol EDGE Winternationals.

Standout leader and reigning ANDRA Australian Top Fuel champion Phil Read has directed a path of consistency in the Auto One/Snap-on/Fuchs Lubricants Top Fueler.

The Sydney-sider is bound to be fired up and ready for redemption following his elimination in the semi-finals of Western Sydney’s Snap-On Nitro Champs.

But such is the depth of competitors in season 2006/07, there’s other proven New South Wales combatants almost certain to line up during the Castrol EDGE Winternationals.

Bettes is anticipating the return to Willowbank of Terry Sainty, Bob Shepherd and Alan Dobson, who’ll again be in control of the Santo Rapisarda owned, National record holding Top Fuel Dragster.

If that’s is not enough, The Lamattina brothers from Victoria will be out to show the entire Top Fuel field that they are contenders for next year’s Championship, citing Willowbank Raceway as their favourite strip and the one where they have had their greatest success.

Entries continue to flood in from across the country to be involved in the 2007 Castrol EDGE Winternationals and will be taken up until the closing date of May 25.

For sports fans World-wide the familiar crackle of Australia’s most high-powered drag racing machines can’t come soon enough as Willowbank Raceway again showcases the best of quarter mile drag racing duels.

This iconic, home-grown Queensland entertainment masterpiece continually serves up first class, magical moments particularly in the closely contested Group One professional categories.

The way season 2006/07 has transpired there’s little doubt among fans, officials or racers themselves that the 2007 Castrol EDGE Winternationals will provide another fine chapter in Australian drag racing.
