Judging has been completed for the inaugural Wallace Bishop Jewellers Photographic Competition and finalist images are being printed and framed ready for a May 26 unveiling at the Ipswich Art Gallery.
During the past nine months, drag racing fans and professional photographers have been scouring Australian quarter mile drag strips and motoring shows, in the hope of capturing an elusive image worthy of finalist status.
A total of 20 images will be showcased at the Ipswich Art Gallery as the cultural hub’s contribution to the City’s annual Carnival of Horsepower celebrations.
It’s a timely acquisition for the gallery and will run in conjunction
with its major exhibit, Eaten Alive – The World of Predators.
“Our May 26 unveiling runs as the perfect pre-cursor to the number one
drag racing show in the country, the Castrol EDGE Winternationals to be
held at our very own Willowbank Raceway on June 8-10,” said Ipswich
Arts Foundation President James Sturges.
“Last year our Director, Michael Beckmann’s vision of combining
motorsport and art proved a major winner as the Driving Passion, the
colours of motorsport became the most popular regional art exhibition
ever held in Australia.
“The standard of entries received for the inaugural Wallace Bishop
Jewellers photographic competition has been of an exceptionally high
standard and for this reason we expect our 2007 contribution to
Ipswich’s Carnival of Horsepower to provide the ideal cultural
complement.
“I’m sure as motorsport once again takes centre stage in Ipswich
there’ll be plenty of interested on-lookers to the Ipswich Art Gallery.
“The photographic display of drag racing beasts will run in conjunction
with our major Eaten Alive - World of Predators exhibition which is
sure to have overall appeal for children and families alike.”
The general motoring theme during last year’s ‘Driving Passion – the
colours of motorsport’ exhibition attracted more than 23 000 people
through the doors of the Ipswich Art Gallery.
Many visitations were by people who had never previously visited the
Gallery and made the Ipswich experience even more enjoyable during this
peak tourism period for the region.
That’s been the motivation towards the Wallace Bishop Jewellers
Photographic Competition and for company Chief Executive Officer Stuart
Bishop the experience has been truly worthwhile.
“In a lot of ways artistic flair is something which encapsulates my own
involvement in drag racing, particularly in respect to the presentation
of my ’67 Camaro Diamond Doorslammer, which I’ll campaign at this
year’s Castrol EDGE Winternationals,” said Bishop.
“This car is very unique in its design, not only through the roof top
cubic zirconia diamond configuration, but also through the attention to
detail in every aspect of the car.
“Overall aesthetic appeal is something that is engrained in the family
business at Wallace Bishop Jewellers and this transcends with my
involvement in drag racing. There are strong synergies which exist in
all forms of art.
“For this reason we have been pleased with the response from fans and
photographers Australia-wide to the inaugural competition and hope to
grow the concept well into the future.”
Final judging of the 20 finalists in the Wallace Bishop Jewelllers
Photographic competition will determine the winner’s in each of the
four categories.
Professional and amateur winners from the Stuart Bishop ’67 Camaro
Diamond Doorslammer subject area, plus winners in the general
Australian drag racing categories will be presented with their prize
packs at a special presentation at the Ipswich Art Gallery on Wednesday
June 6.
The photographer who lays claim to the overall winning image will also
be presented with a half carat, 50-point diamond, similar to the one
encrusted into the roof top configuration of Bishop’s Diamond
Doorslammer.
