Bird Flies In Romania...and soars to third in championship PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 22 May 2007
Sam Bird (20, Claygate) took his maiden win in British Formula 3 this weekend around the streets of  Bucharest, Romania and became the first rookie to take a win in the 2007 season.

Starting from 5th on the grid, Sam stayed in formation behind the safety for the rolling start and held station until the pole sitter and second placed man tangled, after which the next two came together as well!  Sam managed to avoid the carnage and swept into the lead, pulling away from team-mate Niall Breen in 2nd place.  He had over 5 seconds lead until a further safety car bunched the pack up again.  Despite a few spots of rain, a good restart saw Bird pull away again to finish over a second ahead of Breen.

“I feel like all my Christmasses have come at once”, said Sam after the podium presentation. “ I was thrilled with my third place yesterday and now here I am on the top step!  It’s been a fantastic weekend, and I am so impressed with the facilities and organisation here in Bucharest – I hope this race stays on the F3 calendar.  I also want to say a huge thank you to my team and my sponsors – Oblique TV Magazin, BP Ultimate and Perfect Nutrition.”

This weekend’s races will be on Channel 4 at 8am next Sunday May 27.

Sam’s next races take place at Snetterton on June 3.  “now I’ve tasted success, I just want more of the same, so I’m really looking forward to Snett” commented Sam.

In the meantime, Sam takes part in the annual charity football match in Monaco this coming Tuesday evening, with Michael Schumacher, Jarno Trulli, Giancarlo Fisichella, Robert Kubica, Vitantonio Liuzzi and Carlin team-mate Maro Engel.  The match can be seen on Eurosport.
