Guilana Leads The Way For The Aussie Karters In Germany PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 22 May 2007
New South Wales driver Steel Guiliana finished as the best of the Australian drivers competing in the second round of the Rotax Mojo Max Euro Challenge with a fine sixth placing at Wackersdorf in Germany on the weekend.

Guiliana again showed tremendous pace throughout the weekend to be in contention for a podium finish in the Junior Rotax category. After qualifying in 14th position the 2006 Series runner-up worked his way towards the front recording a pair of top ten finishes in the three 8-lap heat races.

The Newcastle pilot steered his Intrepid kart up the order to be seventh at the end of the Pre-Final. Guiliana climbed closer to the front during the early laps of the Final running in fourth spot before dropping three positions with two laps remaining. He eventually crossed the line sixth, 11 spots higher than his result in the opening round.

Joining Guiliana in the Junior ranks was Victorian Luigi Catanese who continued to impress as he climbed his steep learning curve in only his second overseas race. The Shepparton-based driver qualified in 28th position and recorded an 11th, 17th and 10th place finish in each of the heat races to ensure he was one of the top 29 drivers in the 53-kart field who directly transferred into the Finals.

After finishing 17th in the Pre-Final Catanese set some good times early in the Final and before going on to finish in 21st position.

Dutch drivers filled four of the top five spots in Junior Rotax with Jorrit Pex taking his second straight victory over Mats Van den Brand and Indy Dontje.

Guiliana’s fellow Newcastle driver Hayden McBride also impressed throughout the weekend with a fourth and two sixth places in his heats which had the 63-kart Senior Rotax field divided into two races.

McBride, the reigning Australian Rotax Light Champion, was close to the pace of the leaders for the majority of the weekend. The Gillard driver finished 11th in the Pre-Final before going on to battle for a spot inside the top ten in the Final.

Despite his best efforts McBride fell just short of his aim of being inside the top ten for the round crossing the line 12th.

David Sera had a difficult weekend behind the wheel of his Australian-made Arrow kart. The multiple Australian champion could only manage a 15th, 16th and 17th in each of his heat races to start the Pre-Final from 27th spot.

He appeared to on track to charge his way up the order in the Finals when he passed six karts to finish just outside the top 20 in the highly competitive field at the end of the Pre-Final. Unfortunately though, an incident on lap three of the Final cost him a number of spots and he eventually finished 25th.

Dutch driver Mike Joossens won the Final in his Kombikart ahead of Englishman Michael Simpson and fellow Dutch driver Ricardo Romkema.

South African Leroy Poulter won the increasingly popular two-speed Rotax Max DD2 category ahead of Dutch pair Patrick Vasterman and Dennis Kroes while Frechman Jerome Bourquard won the Masters category.

The next round in the Rotax Mojo Max Euro Challenge will be contested at the A1 Speedworld in Austria on July 25-29.
