Performance Racing returns from Bucharest with two more podium finishes as Cong Fu “Frankie” Cheng and Hamad Al Fardan each scored a 3rd place in the British Formula 3 National Class.
Both qualifying sessions were interrupted several times due to red flags, and even when they were running, yellow flags were almost constantly being waved at one point or another of the track. Even though he clashed with Sergio Perez early on in the 2nd qualifying session, Al Fardan did well in the difficult conditions to qualify 4th and 2nd in his class. Cheng was also involved in an incident, but in the 1st session. In his case, however, it meant that he could not manage better than 9th place. The 2nd session did not go much better, as he qualified 6th in the National Class standings.
Due to slippery track conditions, the first race started behind the
safety car. Cheng’s race ended on lap 11, as he touched the wall, lost
control of his car, and crashed into Leo Mansell. Al Fardan kept
everything under control through all the incidents and safety car
periods and finished in 3rd place – the first podium of the season for
the Bahraini driver.
The second race also started behind the safety car. This time around it
was Al Fardan that ended his race on lap 11, crashing as he pushed hard
in 2nd place. Cheng carried on, moving up to 3rd place and holding on
to the championship lead in National Class.
Ricardo Teixeira, the team’s only entrant in the Championship Class,
had a difficult weekend. Having qualified very low for both races, in
28th and 26th place, it would be hard to get a good result. Ricardo did
his best to stay out of trouble in both races, but the constant
incidents and safety car periods meant that he could not go higher than
21st and 17th position.
Team Manager Bobby Issazadhe commented on the weekend: “It was a
difficult weekend for us, but we came away with two podiums. Frankie is
still leading the National Class, and Hamad did very well to get his
first podium of the year! We are heading to Snetterton next, and are
looking forward to it as all our drivers had good results there in
testing.”
The British Formula 3 Championship now returns to the UK, with the next round taking place in Snetterton in two weeks.
