The Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship makes its one and only visit of the year to the North East when Croft Circuit near Darlington plays hosts to round for of the popular series next weekend (June 2/3). This year, the BTCC year celebrates a decade of racing at Croft which in the past few years has attracted record crowds to watch the championship and the home crowd will have plenty to cheer with a number of local drivers once again expected to be to the fore. Newcastle-born Jason Plato will arrive at Croft leading the drivers’ standings having won four of this year’s opening nine races in his SEAT Leon. Also on the 25-strong grid is Durham driver Simon Blanckley in his sibsport team’s Honda Integra meaning tens of thousands of fans, many knowing this is their only chance of the year to see the BTCC in action, are again expected to flock to the challenging circuit. But one man they will have to beat is defending double champion, Matt Neal, who lists Croft as his favourite track and is already a race winner this year in his new Team Halfords Honda Civic. Neal currently lies fourth in the BTCC standings behind SEAT star Plato and Vauxhall team-mates Fabrizio Giovanardi and Tom Chilton. Practice gets underway on Saturday at 9.30 with Sunday's ten race schedule starting at 12.00 noon and including the latest three BTCC rounds plus another seven races from the supporting BMW, Porsche and SEAT championships whereas in the Renault Clio Cup, local farmer Robert Lawson from Richmond will be looking to improve on his third position in the championship.
