Solid Start To Charlotte Campaign For Ambrose PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 29 May 2007
Team Australia driver Marcos Ambrose has started his campaign in the Carquest Auto Parts 300 with a steady performance during practice at the Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte, North Carolina today.

Ambrose, who currently sits 11th in the NASCAR Busch Series points standings, qualified third on debut at the 1.5 mile oval whilst contesting the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series last year.

After posting top 10 times at the venue aboard the Aussie Vineyards-backed #59 Kingsford Charcoal Ford Fusion as a part of the final NASCAR Busch Series open test of the season last week Ambrose was again competitive during today’s three practice sessions.

Ambrose was amongst the top 15 fastest midway through the final practice session while focusing on a competitive race set up aboard the Aussie Vineyards-backed #59 Kingsford Charcoal Ford Fusion. As other competitors turned their focus on a qualifying set-up, and posted faster times as a consequence, Ambrose remained on track to ensure he had a consistent race package.

The Australian finished with the session with 23rd fastest time courtesy of a 30.548 second lap time. Such is the competitiveness of the field Ambrose’s time was a mere 0.682 seconds behind the fastest time posted by Kasey Kahne, who is a regular competitor in the top-level NASCAR Nextel Cup Series.

Ambrose, who currently sits third in the Raybestos Rookie of the Year standings after 12 races, was the second fastest ‘Rookie’ in today’s final practice session.

Tomorrow will see Lowe’s Motor Speedway vacant of on-track action, with qualifying and the Carquest Auto Parts 300 held on in on Saturday night US time (Sunday morning Australian time).

“We didn’t do a qualifying run today but rather focused towards ensuring we will have a competitive, and consistent, race set up. Overall I’m pretty happy with the day and our times,” said Ambrose.

“We lost the handle on the car a little bit mid way through the final session as the track changed but by the end of the day we’d got back on top of things.

“There is a new body on the car this weekend and as a consequence of this we’ve definitely improved on the time sheets. While we’re probably not fast enough to win a race just yet if we can keep out of trouble I’m confident we will be able to mix it with the front guys on Saturday night.”
