Queensland Hosts A Double Of Drag Racing Celebrations PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 29 May 2007
It was cause for double celebrations at Queensland’s Logan Hyperdome shopping centre this morning when the launch of the upcoming 40th Castrol EDGE Winternationals, to be held at Willowbank Raceway on June 8-10, also served as a surprise 50th birthday for International drag racing icon Victor Bray.

As a six-time Australian Top Doorslammer champion, it’s no surprise Victor has a strong affinity with the Winternationals, which is the biggest drag racing event outside North America.

On hand during the celebrations were numerous members of Team Bray including son and fellow Group One drag racer Ben, plus wife Marie who all managed to keep the surprise 50th a well kept secret.

“This has been a great way to start the day, surrounded by family and friends and even more exciting to be sharing the birthday cake to help mark the upcoming 40th Castrol EDGE Winternationals,” said Victor.

“The Winternationals swings into gear in a fortnight and what makes the event so special is the fans who turn up every year to provide valuable support for all the racers.

“I hope everyone here today can help cheer Benny and I on to big things at Willowbank Raceway where I’m counting on winning a third straight gold Christmas tree winner’s trophy in Top Doorslammer.

“Obviously Benny has been on the recovery since a back injury earlier in the season but he’s getting back to his best.

“The Castrol EDGE Chevy and Monaro are running well and it’d be nice to record plenty of victories in front of our major sponsors during another historic Winternationals.”

Happy to play second fiddle as his Dad lapped up the emotion of a milestone birthday bash, Ben Bray was none the less just as big a crowd favourite among weekend shoppers at Logan Hyperdome.

The 23 year-old is always a major threat behind the wheel in elite competition, having mastered two Top Doorslammer Championship crowns and carrying the tag of Australian Top Alcohol titleholder the past season.

With the countdown to the Castrol EDGE Winternationals now in full swing, Bray could think of no better way to complete an injury ravaged season than victory during the 2006/07 finale.

“It’s been great to get together with the fans today and let our hair down but there’s not much time between now and the Winternationals so we’ll be looking to gain an even greater edge before event time,” said Ben.

“We’ve still got a potential test day up our sleeves to work through a few things but all-in-all it’s been coming together nicely.

“The weather has turned a lot cooler up here in Queensland over the past few weeks and I’m sure all racers are counting down the sleeps to the Winternationals.

“This is definitely the event you want to be firing on all cylinders.

“Although the dramas I’ve had with my back have made for a tough season, if we can win through to the finals and go on with the job at the Winternationals that’ll be a great way to finish things off before the off-season.”

Every year the International sporting spotlight is cast upon the Winternationals showpiece, which continues to grow in stature and is the biggest drag racing event in the southern hemisphere.

Entries have been received from across the country to be involved in the 40th Castrol EDGE Winternationals, an event that consistently represents the best of the best going side by side in top level quarter mile drag racing duels.

This iconic, home-grown Queensland entertainment masterpiece continually serves up first class, magical moments particularly in the closely contested Group One professional categories.

The way season 2006/07 has transpired there’s little doubt among fans, officials or racers themselves that the 2007 Castrol EDGE Winternationals will provide another fine chapter in Australian drag racing.
