On home turf there was no stopping local hotshot Kris Walton taking out the third round of the Supaloc Australian Production Car Championship at Queensland Raceway on May 27. In a rough house yet exciting round, Walton won all three races and claimed the series lead. Equal second were the South Australians Steve Kwaitkowski and John Goodacre while the Queenslanders Jake Camilleri and Troy Hoey were next.
“I knew we would be a good chance – at least be in the top two – but then it became harder when Scott (Nicolas) beat me for pole. It was a great round except for the first race and the way that turn out,” Walton said.
Twice in that first outing the Ford Falcon pair came into contact with
Nicolas coming off second best. The latter led early before Walton took
over in his Talbrace Ford. Then it was Kwaitkoski for a brief period
but his Eagle Paint n Panel Ford had some front end damage and retired
as Camilleri’s Envirotek Holden Commodore had a turn at the head of the
pack.
Nicolas grabbed the lead again with one lap to go but a second incident
at turn four saw him around and Walton win from Camillieri, Walton’s
weekend team mate Rod Dawson, and Bruce Heinrich (GJC/Pacemaker Headers
Falcon). The latter and Nicolas were relegated to a second race rear of
grid start for technical abnormalities.
In fifth was Troy Hoey in the ex Heinrich championship winning Sunstate
Gas & Plumbing Falcon from last year, which showed the way to Matt
Lovell (Cell-tic Batteries Falcon) and the recovering Oki Ford of
Nicholas. Goodacre was next best placed of the Holdens, his Brice
Commodore in ninth ahead of NSW’s Peter Dane.
Shawn Jamieson’s run in the BRE Commodore that Kerry Wade drove at
Phillip Island was eventful and short lived as it was caught up in some
of the early turmoil as well as cooking the motor. Michael Uebergang’s
late Saturday engine sway was a vain effort as the Falcon blew another
at the start of the second lap.
Camilleri won the start of race two, leading for a brief spell before
the Walton Falcon took over. Camilleri and Nicolas would retire with
gearbox breakages as the back markers charged through the field. They
were led by Kwaitkowski who would take second ahead of Heinrich and the
Goodacre Commodore while the Fords of Matt Lovell, Hoey and Dane ensued.
The race finished under a safety car as officials couldn’t get Dawson’s
Falcon out of the turn three sand trap after it ran out of brakes.
There were several torrid battles in the early part of race three until
the order settled with Walton collecting his third win ahead of
Kwaitkowski and Heinrich. “Our Falcon was a rocket in that last race,”
said Heinrich, the reigning champion and previous points leader.
Next was Camilleri from Nicolas and Goodacre while Dawson limped home
with a broken gearbox ahead of Lovell and Dane who said that his Cash
Stop Ford was “Getting closer to the front runners – we just have to do
more work on the dyno,” after being a competitive sixth early in the
race.
The popular six cylinder Holden Commodore verse Ford Falcon category is
supported by Supaloc Steel Building Systems, Pedders Suspension, Kumho
Tyres, Xtreme Clutch, EMS Fuel Injection, Cebco Brakes and CSA Alloy
Wheels.
