VX Racing's Fabrizio Giovanardi pulled off a last-minute recovery to finish fifth in today's Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship qualifying at Croft.
The seven-times touring car champion spent most of the session lapping in 14th but the team identified the source of the problem in a broken rear suspension. This was fixed with seconds to spare, allowing the Italian to set his best time as the chequered flag fell.
It means the 40-year-old will start ahead of main Drivers' Championship
rival, Jason Plato, in the SEAT who will start in eighth place.
Tom Chilton struggled to show good pace in the session. The 22-year-old
will work with the engineers this evening to resolve the problem.
Fabrizio Giovanardi #5 "On the last lap I was really scared to make a
mistake. Fifth position is the best I could do today. I've got Plato
behind me, which is the main target. I'm just going to focus tomorrow
on scoring points."
Tom Chilton #7 "On the first run the tyres went off very quickly and
in the second run I had loads of over-steer. We then tried to improve
as Fabrizio did on the last lap but unfortunately we ran out of time.
"I'm starting from row six tomorrow and I'm just hoping for rain now."
