Action Assured As UK Racers Land in Ireland PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 05 June 2007
Three of the most action packed race series in the UK land in Ireland this weekend for a two day festival of racing. The NASCAR style Pick-Up Trucks head the bill joined by the highly popular Legends racers and first time visitors the endurance racers of the 'Uniroyal Fun Cup'. the Irish Motor Racing Club will take charge of the eighteen race programme which promises action all the way provided not only by the UK classes but also by the best of Irish.

The high speed pick-up's are unique in European racing and are styled on the American Oval Racing NASCAR Trucks. The purpose built racers are closely related to our own Dunlop Supercar Championship having been designed and built to the same formula by Sonny Howard of SHP the company behind the Pick-Up championship. A field of over twenty cars is expected to make the championships second trip to Ireland,d in its tenth anniversary year, and the cars are expected to turn some of the fastest saloon racing laps of all time at the track. A championship race each day with the grid order being the reverse of championship positions means close racing will be the order of the day.

Always highly entertaining, the Legends Cars make another visit to Ireland with their biggest ever travelling grid. Many championships have been billed as providing frantic racing action over the years but these diminutive cars are the only ones that truly live up to that description. Low weight, high power and a very short wheelbase make these 5/8th scale 1930's US racing replicas a handful. Their spectacular performance coupled with reverse grids and short sharp races always leads to excitement with, as their own slogan goes, 'more overtaking in one race than a season of Formula One'. The legends will race three times each day with the first two races deciding the grid for the final. Championship points are on offer in each race so there will be no quarter asked or given through the six Legends races scheduled over the weekend.

Making its first visit to Ireland is the Uniroyal Fun-Cup for identical VW Beetle bodied racers. While not the fastest cars on the Mondello timetable an entry of over thirty will make for an exciting spectacle as the teams of drivers try to negotiate three hours of racing on the tight Mondello Park National track. Throw in compulsory pit-stops every half hour and you have the recipe which has made this series one of the most popular around. Two separate events with the grid for each race being drawn from a hat should provide some good entertainment in what is a departure from the normal sprint races seen at Mondello events.

The Dunlop Supercars, Dunlop Abarth Cup, FDS Worldwide Express Formula Vee Championship and combined Southern and Northern Irish Formula Ford championships are the Irish classes on the bill. Formula Vee races on Saturday with a qualifying race required to decide the grid for the championship race. All the other classes have two races each on Sunday's timetable.
