It was a bittersweet round for the Glenfords Racing Carrera Cup team with race wins and brilliant racing soured by early retirements and car damage.

In the only practice session for the round, Alex Davison, competing in V8 Supercars as well as Carrera Cup in his Glenfords-DeWalt GT3 this weekend, again set the pace early with a 1:13.3859 and was top of the times until the closing seconds but was satisfied with second fastest in the early stage of the weekend.

Jonathon Webb, also competing in V8 Supercars for Glenfords Racing alongside Marcus Marshall in the two V8 Supercar endurance events, showed he was switched on from the outset setting a series of fast times before finishing with his fastest lap of 1:13.5796 to be third in his Glenfords-Makita Cup Car.

Glenfords-Hitachi's David Wall, equal in Rookie of the Year standings for 2006, was 14th in the session, still coming to grips with the new circuit, setting a fastest lap of 1:14.7663.

As with the form all season Davison sat on top of the time sheet for qualifying with a 1:12.1838 in his fifth lap, but for the first time this season he was pipped by another driver, David Reynolds who set a time in the dying minutes of 1:12.1631, just 0.0207 seconds in front of Davison.

Webb continued his strong weekend with a 1:12.3554, less than 0.2 seconds off pole which gave him fifth for tomorrow's first race.

Wall improved strongly on his practice session to sit well inside the top ten in eighth with a 1:12.8258 and again giving the Glenfords Racing Carrera Cup team three drivers inside the top ten.

Wall's development and grid position notable in that it replicated his previous best qualifying at Oran Park, a circuit he has raced at for years and Sandown a track he had yet to complete a lap on before this round.

Davison had an impressive start to the weekends racing in the Glenfords-DeWalt GT3, quickly moving from second on the grid to assume first position after a swift move saw him pass fellow Victorian David Reynolds on the sixth lap.

Jonathan Webb in the Glenfords-Makita Porsche started fifth on the grid with Wall in the Glenfords Hitachi beginning race one proceedings from eighth, rounding out top ten starts for all three Porsche's in the Glenfords stable.

Race one belonged to Davison, setting a lap record of 1:13.0198 after completing the seventh lap, only to out do himself and set another lap record, posting a 1:12.9966 after the tenth lap.

After taking the lead, Davison never looked back in a strong and convincing performance at the front of the field, eventually taking the chequered flag in emphatic style in front of Craig Baird and David Reynolds.

Starting from fifth, Jonathan Webb slipped back to seventh in the Glenfords-Makita GT3 early in proceedings, settling in behind Glenfords team mate Wall who moved through the field to sixth in a strong showing.

Wall and Webb found themselves nose to tail in their own battle throughout the race, eventually crossing the line in sixth and seventh respectively with the team mates not risking all and working for the team to bring home all three cars in the top seven.

An empathic race one victory meant Davison started from pole position; however an early challenge from Craig Baird saw Davison pushed back to third, with David Reynolds also slipping passed Davison.

Wall in the Glenfords-Hitachi Porsche was caught in a tangle with John Kaias during the first lap, effectively ending both drivers' races and putting a stop to race proceedings with the race yellow flagged.

The restart saw Davison in third position and Jonathan Webb in the Glenfords- Makita Porsche restarting in ninth.

Webb quickly passed Rodney Jane during the fifth lap to move into eighth position, while a tight tussle up the front of the field saw Davison leave the track and slip to ninth after coming of second best in a battle with Baird.

Webb was in embroiled in a tense battle with Jim Richards for sixth spot, and an impressive move saw Webb pass the veteran to eventually finish sixth.

Davison, in the Glenfords- DeWalt was unable to better his position after slipping off the track and finished ninth

Some mixed results in race two saw Davison start ninth on the grid for the final Carrera Cup race of the weekend. Jonathan Webb in the Glenfords-Makita Porsche started from sixth and quickly set about moving through the field.

Unfortunately for Wall his weekend was over after structural damage to the chassis was identified and the car was forced to withdraw due to safety reasons, meaning the Glenfords crew had an extra set of hands for Sunday with Wall putting his hand up to help out.

A brilliant start for Webb moved him from sixth to second place behind Dean Fiore, with Davison pressuring Richards back in ninth position.

Davison was able to push the Glenfords-DeWalt past Richards on the seventh lap, and posted yet another lap record this weekend with a 1:12.5050 after the eighth.

A lapse by Webb during the ninth lap saw him passed by Baird and Reynolds, momentarily slipping back to fourth, until a slick move regained him second position which he consolidated, eventually finishing just behind Reynolds in a season best race result.

Davison again topped his lap record, posting a 1:12.5027 on the thirteenth lap, and by quickly moving up the rankings to finish fifth he salvaged a third place overall for the round.

Driver Quotes:

Alex Davison

"It was an interesting weekend with highs and lows. We had a great car again and while we didn't get pole we weren't far off the pace at all and came away with a great win in the first race."

"From there things went downhill and after a coming together with Baird I was playing catch up and trying to get as many points as possible.

"We came away with a third for the round which is some consolation but we have a great team so it would be great to get some more round wins for them."

Jonathon Webb

"It has been a really full on weekend with V8 Supercar duties on top of the Carrera Cup but I have loved every minute of it and it has given me plenty of experience and confidence for the future."

"The car was really strong and we made some good inroads, particularly in the last race where we had a great race, it was one of the better races I have been involved in with up to five of us challenging for the lead at the end."

David Wall

"It is always difficult when you come to a track having never raced there before but I felt I had some really good speed the longer the weekend went on."

"Our sixth result in race one was a really satisfying result and race two I had a spin where I had a slight touch but all was fine and I was waiting for the field to pass through and I got collected on the drivers side which ended the race.and when we looked closer we saw the structural damage so had to retire from the final race today."

Andy McElrea, Team Manager

"It has been a very bittersweet weekend for us."

"Qualifying and race one was looking really good for us and to have all cars in the top seven is a tremendous result but from there things went from sweet to bitter.

"We lost David (Wall) after he was given a hand getting turned around then had Alex (Davison) come off second best in a tangle with Baird which put him back as well.

"Webby made up for a poor start in that race but I think we'd rather put that race behind us.

"The final race we only had two on the grid and an extra bloke helping out in the garage but Webby was clearly in a racing mood and drove a real strong, forceful race and battled really well in one of the better races we've seen for a while and Alex made great inroads to set a new alp record and salvage third for the round so there's some positive to take out of today but all-in-all it was an up and down weekend."
