The Lexmark Indy 300 Banana Boat Students Day was launched today by V8 Supercar star Russell Ingall at regular event participant Southport State Primary School.
Focusing on the educational aspects of all things motorsport plus giving students an insight into what they can expect to see and do during this major sporting event, Ingall was more than happy to answer a flood of questions from enthusiastic youngsters.
Southport State Primary School has participated in the free Banana Boat
Students Day concept every year since its inception in 2000.
Banana Boat Students Day will be held on the traditional first day of the Lexmark Indy 300, Thursday October 18.
Ingall declared there was great merit in the concept and praised the
efforts of event organisers in providing a great educational tool.
“I can’t say I was ever a big fan of school but what Indy provides
through Students Day is always an enjoyable time for the kids,” said
Ingall.
“It’s something that I’m sure all schools will be able to take
something from. It’s just a shame there wasn’t things like this offered
to kids during my days at school.
“While there’s a strong educational side to Students Day, it’s also a
chance for the kids and their teachers to chat with people involved
with the event, plus get up close and personal with their favourite
drivers.
“I’d encourage all schools to get involved and let’s hope the guys here
at Southport State School are cheering on the Caltex Falcon during the
three V8 Supercar races at Indy later in the year.”
Also attending today’s launch were members of the QUT Motorsport
program who discussed the aspects of developing a career in motorsport
through educational pursuits.
Lexmark Indy 300 official charities Surf Lifesaving Queensland and
CanTeen also contributed material that was included in prize packs
distributed to students at today’s launch.
School classes and teachers can attend Banana Boat Student’s Day for
free and experience the many educational elements of the Lexmark Indy
300 across diverse subject areas including maths, science, physical
education, engineering, music, tourism, event management and art.
Students can get up close and personal with the drivers and
personalities involved in the event, attend autograph sessions, get
involved in hands-on demonstrations and win prizes.
Last year more than 10,500 students and teachers attended the day,
while this year around 1,500 schools will be invited with organisers
hoping to attract a record 12,000 students.
Lexmark Indy 300 Marketing Manager Greg Price said Banana Boat Students
Day has become an important part of the Lexmark Indy 300.
“Not only is the Lexmark Indy 300 a popular excursion for students but
it provides opportunities for teachers to prepare studies in numerous
different areas of the school curriculum - science, hospitality, event
management, film and television, health and physical education,
mathematics and engineering,” said Price.
“There will be educational forums held on the Sea FM Stage, a Speed
Comparison on track, presentations by Surf Life Saving Queensland and
the Department of Sport and Recreation, plus involvement from National
sporting team the North Melbourne Kangaroos.”
Schools interested in attending Banana Boat Students Day can contact
the Lexmark Indy 300 Marketing Department on phone 07 5588 6800.
Registrations close in September.
All participating students are given an activity pack which includes
information, questions and activities relating to the Lexmark Indy 300
and presentations they will experience.
