BMWs in control at wet Phillip Island |

While wet weather affected qualifying for round five of the Shannons Australian Production Car Championship at Phillip Island today, it did little to stop the BMW onslaught as the pair of 335i Turbos driven by series leader Garry Holt and team mate Barry Morcom as the pair secured the front row for race one.
Holt’s Eastern Creek Karts/2UE posted a best time of 2 minutes 10.4113 seconds for pole, two tenths faster then Morcom’s Rondo BMW which was about a second quicker than Leigh Mertens in his G & D Performance Holden Commodore HSV.
The three Class SP cars were significantly faster that the next best,
the Class A Paul Wakeling Holden Commodore SS of Steve Briffa and
Trevor Keene’s Class B Med West Multimedia Mini Cooper S. In fifth was
the fastest Class C entry – Amber Anderson in the Briffa owned Holden
Vectra ahead of the Century 21 Hazelbrook Falcon XR8 of Chris Delfsma.
Class C winner from round four’s Eastern Creek, David Mertens (Proton
Satria) was next ahead of the Class B Trophy BMW 323i of Mike
Fitzgerald. In tenth position and returning to the category after a
couple of seasons in Formula 3 was Lauren Gray in the Class C Toyota
Echo.
Later today race one, over six laps, is a scratch race that counts to
class points only whilst tomorrow’s two races of ten laps duration
each, will be contested for both class and outright points.
