A stunning performance for round four of the Toyo Drift Australia series at Queensland Raceway has seen local Team VIP Petfoods’ daredevil drifter Robbie Bolger leapfrog from fifth to first in the series standings with only one round left to run.
While the Gold Coast’s Bolger stood on the round podium as a very close runner-up, the results were just what the winner of last year’s Queensland round needed to push him to the top of the ladder in what has been the most competitive drift series to date.
Choosing to pilot his 840 horsepower VIP Petfoods Holden Monaro instead
of the new VE Commodoore he has under development paid off for Bolger
today with his display over the weekend matched only by first place
winner Fernando Werheil – who was awarded the win only after a re-run
was called for by the judges when the pair’s first battle proved too
close to call.
While Bolger would have preferred to take the outright win on home
soil, to come second to Werheil was the next best thing with the New
South Welshman someone he counts amongst his friends.
“I am really happy with today’s results and of course would be even
happier if I had won, but to come second to Fernando is the next best
thing as he is a mate of mine, we race together a lot and we get along
really well, so I was glad it was him,” said Bolger.
“The car was in excellent form today, absolutely flawless, and she will be coming back for the final round in Oran Park.
“It would be great to bring the VE out, but there is too much on the
line now with the championship and only one round remaining to let that
ride on a car I am any less than 100 percent confident in – the VE
still has a lot of development ahead of her.
“A full rebuild will take place between now and Oran Park for the
Monaro, and we will be there ready to dish it out come September – I am
determined to get myself on the top step of that podium next month.”
While Bolger may have piloted the Monaro this weekend, the VE did not
sit idle – with relative newcomer Christian D’Agostin piloting the
monster 940 horsepower V8 around Queensland Raceway. Although knocked
out early in the piece, valuable track time for both car and driver are
now in the bag to assist in the further development of both.
The final round of the 2007 Toyo Drift Australia Series will be held in
September at Oran Park, and with all four of the rounds run to date
this year boasting different winners, it is sure to be a thrilling
episode for all involved.
With Bolger one of the four to take a round win this year and along
with Christian Pickering one of only two drivers to visit the podium
more than once, you can be assured Bolger will be turning it on to take
himself to the top after finishing third for the series in 2006.
