Continuing an unprecedented run of success in qualifying, David Ryan was again fastest in qualifying for round six of the Shannons Australian Production Car Championship when he flung his Ford Falcon XR6 Turbo around Queensland Raceway today.
Since pipped into second at Mallala in 2004, Ryan has not been beaten for the top spot. “Yes I am happy with the car today especially when everyone around me was bolting on new tyres,” he said.
The combination had over half a second on the Ford of John Houlder who
was in his V8 version. The Falcons will share the front row for the
initial scratch race while Nick Dunkley in another XR6 Turbo, was third
fastest ahead of the lone Holden Commodore SSZ of Leigh Mertens.
Out of position five will be Chris Delfsma in the second of the XR8s
while Colin Osborne’s Toyota Celica headed the smaller engined cars in
sixth. The reigning champion headed up Class B where Allan Shephard
(Celica) split Osborne and Trevor Keene.
The latter two had to also play second fiddle to the Trophy Class
Toyota MR2 of Phil Alexander which was seventh overall. His nearest
class rivals Adam Beechey (Honda Integra) and Brendan Cook (BMW) were
tenth and eleventh respectively.
The lone Class C entry is the class leader Darren Best whose Ford Focus
will start 12th in the first race – a scratch race over ten laps that
earns class points only.
There will follow two handicap races over 20 laps which count to both outright and class standings.
