The Spirit Racing team heads to the Belgian Grand Prix circuit of Spa Francorchamps this weekend for the latest round of the VdeV Endurance Series.
The Freespirit Automotive backed squad goes into the six-hour event with every intention of winning the event following the development of its Norma chassis since the last round at Dijon at the beginning of July.
The team has signed up multi-championship and Le Mans 24 hours winning engineer, Alan Mugglestone, to its effort and after two days of testing with its 2007 car, it believes it has a great chance of claiming two steps of the podium next Sunday.
“I can’t wait to get to Spa, it’s one of the circuits that I’ve been
looking forward to racing on again all season,” said Jamie Derbyshire.
“We’re hoping that we can have a good, trouble free run and be right on
the pace at the front after the testing at Pembrey we did, The car is a
lot better, everything we did there made an improvement,” he added.
“Alan has moved the car forwards and the whole team is keen to get to Spa to see what progress we’ve made,” he said.
While Jamie shares his car with his brother Adam, their team-mates Rob
Garofall and Simon Phillips will also be out to collect a good result,
especially after leading this particular round at the fifth hour mark
last season only to go out with problems.
“I think we’re in really good shape for this event,” said Rob. “It’s a
circuit that both Simon and I really like and the car is running well.
We’ll definitely be looking to get a better result than last year when
we were in with a chance of winning it,” he said.
Rob will also be looking to secure his sixth pole position of the year
in Belgium too. However, is knows that his team-mates may have
something to say about it during qualifying.
“I’d like to get pole-position again, but I reckon Adam and Jamie will
be right on it now their car is sorted and they will definitely be
going for it on Saturday as well as throughout the six hours of the
race. But, if the main rivals on track are in the same team that’s
great, it’s definitely good for Spirit Racing and with someone like
Alan on board it’s only going to help us get better as the season goes
on,” he added.
