Harlesden-based Formula Renault UK driver Matt Russell is looking
forward to what will be his first ever outing on the full Donington
Park Grand Prix Circuit next weekend, 9th/10th September, during the
15th and 16th rounds of the 2006 season.
The 22-year-old, who competes for the Doncaster-based Russell Racing
team, has never driven on the Leicestershire venue’s famous GP layout
at any stage during his short three-year motor racing career but he is
eagerly awaiting the chance to sample such corners as the Melbourne
Hairpin and Fogarty’s Esses for the very first time.
Matt’s race performances this season have largely been impressive, it’s
qualifying which has proven to be the biggest hurdle to overcome for
the Leoline Travel and Maltings Leisure & Fitness-supported star.
However, he is confident next weekend will provide a golden opportunity
to enjoy his best outing of the season in front of an expected crowd of
more than 50,000 spectators, Formula Renault UK sharing the bill at
Donington with the prestigious World Series by Renault category.
“I’m really looking forward to racing on the Grand Prix track, I’ve
never driven it before so it will certainly be a very interesting new
experience for me and one which I hope will see us produce our best
performance of the year so far”, commented Matt.
“During the recent Silverstone test we made some good progress and we
were very pleased with the amount of set-up work we managed to
complete. Donington really should be the biggest meeting of the season
so it’d be fantastic, especially as it’s the team’s local track, if
we’re able to achieve our best results of the year.”
Russell Racing will also be looking forward to welcoming several
competition winners to Donington Park next weekend following a recent
contest which ran in conjunction with the team on BBC Radio Sheffield’s
Bank Holiday Monday Breakfast Show.
With a crowd of well over 50,000 spectators expected, the meeting will
not only see the Formula Renault UK Championship in action alongside
the World Series by Renault, the support package of races will also
include Formula Renault Eurocup, Renault Clio Cup and Eurocup Megane
Trophy.
In addition, the reigning World Champion Renault F1 Team will provide
Formula One enthusiasts with the chance to see Fernando Alonso’s 2005
title-winning car put through its paces on the full Donington Park
Grand Prix layout by team test driver Heikki Kovalainen.
Formula Renault UK testing will take place on Wednesday, 6th September,
with qualifying for rounds 15 and 16 scheduled to start at 13.25 on
Saturday, 9th September.
Both races will then be contested on Sunday, 10th September, with round
15 expected to get underway at 10.00 and round 16 timetabled to begin
at 16.00. At this stage, it remains unconfirmed whether the race
meeting will benefit from live television coverage.
