Two-times Brno pole-sitter, Rickard Rydell, says the FIA World Touring Car Championship grid will enjoy the tricky circuit even more thanks to Yokohama’s Advan tyres when they race there this weekend.
Rydell, from Sweden, describes the challenging circuit as similar to Spa with lots of gradient changes and chicanes which require good response from tyres.
“If the rubber is fast to react you feel the car much better,” said the
former British Touring Car Champion, who drives for SEAT Sport in the
WTCC. “It’s more fun because the car is more responsive.
“I’m impressed by how far Yokohama reacted in pre-season testing. We
have a very good tyre this year and since it’s only the manufacturer’s
first year with the series I’m sure they will improve even more. We
really do have a very good tyre.”
The weather forecast for the weekend is dry and hot in the Czech
Republic, meaning teams will almost certainly choose Advan slicks.
“Everyone will be working on the camber set up of the cars,” said
Rydell, 38. “If it’s really hot we’ll have to be careful how aggressive
we are. We haven’t been to Brno with the Léon before but I was on pole
here in 2004 with the Toledo and I think the Léon should be better.
“It’s a great track and I really like it. There are also a lot of
chances to overtake, so it always gives good racing. Possibly the most
difficult section is going downhill into the double right-hander, but
you have to find a good rhythm all the way around the track. It’s the
kind of circuit where, if you get one corner wrong, you’ll probably get
the next wrong as well, so a good lap is usually a really good lap!”
Yokohama Europe’s Marketing Manager, Kazuyoshi Sekiguchi, says the
tyres have proved very effective at tracks similar to Brno and he is
confident the Czech Republic will further confirm his brand’s growing
reputation.
“I’m extremely proud that our product is so well received by the
drivers,” said Sekiguchi. “They are the experts and it gives me great
satisfaction to be keeping some of the best drivers in the world happy.”
Qualifying will begin at 15:00 CET on Saturday September 2 with the two
races scheduled for 15:00 and 16:15 the following day. All the action
will be live on Eurosport.
