BTCC ace ready and raring to go
After a long overdue family holiday in the weeks since the last round of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship, Barrow-upon-Humber racer Martyn Bell is refreshed and ready to tackle the challenges of Knockhill for the first time this coming weekend (2/3 September).
Despite ten years of successful racing prior to joining the BTCC at the start of the year, Martyn has never raced at the picturesque 1.30 mile circuit overlooking the Firth of Forth – a venue which is renowned for providing some of the most exciting racing of the season.
Although Snetterton three weeks ago proved to be a difficult weekend
for Martyn and the Geoff Steel Racing team, the BMW 320i has shown a
marked improvement in form over the second half of the season and
Martyn will look to put on a good show for his fans once again in the
eighth round of the year.
“I’ve never been to Knockhill before but I’m as excited as ever,” he
said. “We’re getting into the back end of the season now and I think it
is fair to say that we have found our feet in the BTCC. There are three
race meetings left to run and we will be giving it our all over those
three meetings.
“While I’ve not been to Knockhill, I know what the weather can be like
and I’m hoping there will be some rain as the BMW really likes the wet
conditions. We’ll use the first practice session as a bit of a recce
and then hope to tag onto a quicker car in the second session to set us
up for qualifying and race day.
“I’m going to Scotland after a break with the family which I haven’t
had for a while, so I’m relaxed, refreshed and ready to go!”
Prior to the race weekend itself, Martyn will take part in the British
Touring Cars Live: Edinburgh event on the streets of the Scottish
capital on Thursday (31 August). Meeting and greeting the fans in a
special autograph session during the evening, Martyn will also perform
demonstrations runs in the BMW, with title chasers Colin Turkington and
Jason Plato and Scottish favourite Gordon Shedden also in action.
“The street demo should be great fun,” Martyn said. “I’ve only ever
heard the car from the inside but I keep getting told it is one of the
best sounding on the grid so hopefully it will impress the fans
watching on the sidelines.”
