To be run in conjunction with the WPS Bathurst Motor Festival at Mount Panorama on February 8-10, the WPS Bathurst 12 Hour will feature new cars, extra classes and more variety following feedback from the motoring industry which has allowed Organisers to build on the success of the event run earlier this year. Craig Denyer of WPS Bathurst 12 Hour Category Manager SPHERIX said the changes included a refinement of the lower classes to better represent vehicle capacity and price, and to ensure that cars of similar performance and specification were grouped together. “The growth in the range of “Hot Hatch” type models over the past year has prompted us to split the category into an under 3-litre Production Sport class and an over 3-litre Performance Hatch class. There are some exciting new models in these classes that will provide great on track action giving potential entrants some real manufacturer choice,” said Denyer. “We have added a class specifically for 6-cylinder production cars to represent the number of V6 and straight 6-cylinder cars on the market, as well as an over 5-litre production sedan class for V8’s and Turbo 6’s.” New classes for the 2008 event include a category specifically for automatic and semi automatic cars, a V8 Ute class and a significant increase in the number of models eligible for the Eco/Diesel category. “The philosophy of the race is to represent the mass road going market, and with the “The number of manufacturers directly enquiring about models for the diesel class is very encouraging, and we have also had a Melbourne competitor lodge an expression of interest to run a Lexus GS 450 Hybrid.” Modern Tarmac Rally Cars are also eligible giving manufacturers the opportunity to showcase their product in the WPS Bathurst 12 Hour, then enter Targa Tasmania with the same car two months later, therefore better leveraging their motorsport investment. The race for outright victory will see a repeat of the classic showdown between rear wheel drive performance cars such as the BMW 335i, Holden Commodore SS, HSV, Falcon XR8, FPV Typhoon and the 4-cylinder turbo-charged all wheel drive Subaru WRX Sti and Mitsubishi EVOs. The all new WRX Sti and EVO X are both due for release early next year and the 12 Hour would be an ideal platform for the Australian launch. Event Director James O’Brien believes the finalisation of this Eligibility List signals the beginning of a new phase for the revived endurance event. “Since Easter’s successful running of the reborn WPS Bathurst 12 Hour earlier this year, a number of stakeholders including CAMS, the Bathurst Regional Council, Manufacturers, Category Managers and individual competitors have all shown their interest to guarantee the event continues to grow in the future,” said O’Brien. “I am confident the Vehicle Eligibility List produced will provide the majority of Manufacturers with both a cost effective opportunity to compete in the Event and confidence that a level playing field will apply to all involved. “Additionally, the Vehicle Eligibility List, combined with the soon to be released regulations, will ensure a level of cost containment for competitors thus providing opportunities for privateers to compete against the factory-backed teams.” The 2008 WPS Bathurst Motor Festival will be held at Mount Panorama on February 8-10, incorporating the WPS Bathurst 12 Hour on Sunday February 10.
