71 year old makes Drag racing comeback |

WHAT:
Over the past 12 months, 71 year-old Sunshine Coast drag racer
George Wegener has been required to undergo a preventative heart
operation (double bypass) plus an eye operation to maintain his
Australian drag racing licence.
Tomorrow, Wegener will undertake some launch test passes at Willowbank
Raceway in preparation for his greatly awaited return to competitive
racing at this year’s Australian Nationals in Queensland on September
14-16.
Boasting a drag racing career spanning almost 40 years, the
Sunshine Coast driver is one of only two individuals aged over 70, to
be currently registered with an Australian National Drag Racing
Association (ANDRA) licence.
Proving he still has what it takes, two seasons ago as a 69
year-old, Wegener broke through for a career first Track Championship
title.
Showing the broadside of drag racing competition, 14 year-old
Bundaberg driver Cody Grohn will initiate a series of one-eighth mile
passes in order to gain his licence and be ready to debut in Junior
Dragster competition at the Australian Nationals.
Grohn has represented Queensland in soccer and touch and as a keen
sportsman will be keen to make an impact among the Junior Dragster
ranks where drivers are aged from 8-16 years.
