Jeremy Metcalfe has underlined his intention to challenge for race
victories at Donington Park Grand Prix Circuit this weekend, 8th/9th September,
after a highly successful official Formula Renault UK test outing at the
Leicestershire venue earlier today.
The 19-year-old AKA Cobra racer, who is a student at nearby Loughborough
University where he studies Banking and Finance, started the day in tremendous
style by setting the fastest time during the first of three test sessions with a
lap of 1m 30.746 seconds.
During the second 50-minute session, Jeremy produced the second fastest lap
with a time of 1m 30.400 seconds to confirm his consistency and although he was
unable to get the most out of his new tyres during the final period, the
BillChaser-backed ace has high hopes he could be a serious challenger for race
victory during rounds 17 and 18.
“We were very fast all day which was great and a real boost ahead of the
weekend, I really want to return to the podium and preferably the top step”,
said Fleet-based Jeremy, “The only shame today was the fact I didn’t get the
most out of my new tyres at all, I didn’t put a good lap in so the final session
wasn’t as strong for us as it should have been.”
Today’s outing, which precedes the weekend’s penultimate race meeting of
the 2007 season, marked Jeremy’s welcome return to the cockpit of his Formula
Renault UK car having made a successful sportscar debut at Knockhill Circuit in
Scotland last weekend during the Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship.
He added: “It was good to be back in my Formula Renault today but I
thoroughly enjoyed the Porsche outing at Knockhill at the weekend. I really
think the experience of the Porsche has helped push me forward and I’m sure we
can fight for podiums, and quite probably wins, this Sunday. The car felt good
today and the test went very smoothly.”
With just two race meetings remaining in the current Formula Renault UK
series, drivers are beginning to think about their plans for 2008 but for now
Jeremy has his sights focused on the World Series by Renault-supporting event
which is expected to attract over 100,000 enthusiasts.
Just one 20-minute Formula Renault UK qualifying session will take place on
Saturday, 8th September, and is expected to get underway at 13.25. Each driver’s
fastest lap going to form the grid for round 17 with every competitor’s second
quickest time determining the starting order for round 18.
Round 17 is timetabled to begin at 09.25 on Sunday, 9th September, with
round 18 scheduled to follow at 15.50.
