Winrow Heads Test At Winning Circuit PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 06 September 2007
Ben Winrow (Earls Barton) topped the timesheets during official testing for round 10 of the ELF Renault Clio Cup at Donington Park, where he won round six earlier this season. The Total Control Racing ace set a time of 1min 47.143s (84.00mph) in the third and final session on the Grand Prix configuration of the Derbyshire circuit, which this weekend hosts the World Series by Renault event.

Momo UK’s Stefan Hodgetts (Redditch) was second quickest 0.336s behind, while In Tune with Robertshaw Racings’ Michael Doyle (Gartocharn) was third on combined classification. The Scottish teenager was fastest in each of the first two sessions, with his mark of 1min 47.587s (83.65mph) in session two good enough for third overall.

Doyle and Hodgetts, separated by a mere 0.027s, headed Z Speed Racing’s Championship leader Martin Byford (Colchester) in session one as 38 drivers out of the 41 entered for round 10 tested on Wednesday, 5th September. Team Eurotech-John Guest Speedfit’s Andrew Jordan (Sutton Coldfield), Robertshaw Racing’s Chris Dymond (Akeley) and Mardi Gras Motorsport’s Ed Pead (Northampton) completed the top six.

Doyle and Hodgetts also filled the top two spots in session two, this time by the even narrower margin of 0.015s, ahead of Winrow, Byford, Pead and Benham Motorsport with Robertshaw Racing’s Barry Benham (Cheltenham). Cleland Motorsport’s Clio Cup debutant Simon Quinn (Co Meath) improved 10 places to lie 24th, ahead of JHR Developments’ returnee Richard Cannon (Chesterfield).

Session three saw Winrow surge to the top of the times with Hodgetts again in second place. JHR’s Robert Lawson (Richmond, N Yorks) climbed to third, with Dymond ahead of Youth 4 Human Rights with SVE’s Niki Lanik (Ashurst Wood). Martin Byford rounded out the top six as he prepares for the race that could take him to the brink of the title.

Commenting on the day, fastest driver Ben Winrow said: “I’ve always enjoyed Donington Park as the circuit suits my driving style. You have to be very smooth and carry speed through the corners and my style is smooth enough to take advantage of that. Donington Park is my local circuit this season and I’ll have around 100 guests here at the weekend so I hope to put on a good performance for them.”

Qualifying for round 10 takes place on Saturday, 8th September with the race on Sunday, 9th September due to start at 11.25.
